Integumentary System Flashcards
functions of integumentary system
- regulate body temperature due to capillaries, hair
- protects body from environment
- gets info from environment via sensory organs
- excret water, salt, urea
- helps with immune system
- capillaries store blood
- create vitamin D when exposed to UV radiation structure
types of epithelial cells
- simple squamous
- simple cuboidal
- simple cuboidal
- simple columnar
- stratified for each of them
- transitional
- pseudostratfied columnar
epidermis
upper layer, no blood vessels, help waterproof our body
* skin created in bottom layer of epidermins, as they go upwards, they lose organells and start mass producing keratin
dermis
connective tissue, has blood vessels/nerves/glands/hair follicles
* contains collagen, elastic fibers
* glands include sebaceous glands which create oil, sweat glands which create sweat
* 2 layers: papillary (more superfiical and responsible for finger prints), reticular (deeper and thicker, made of dense irregular connective tissue)
hypodermis
- deepest layer and contains larger nerves and blood vessels
- loose CT and adipose (fat) tissue = main function is fat storage
sudoriferous (sweat) gland
- eccrine glands (sweat glands): over entire body and important for thermoregulation
- apocrine glands: specific sites (secrete into hair follicle ex: ear wax or milk
sebaceous glands
- all over the body (except palms and soles)
- secrete sebum (oils + wax) into hair follicle
layers of human skin
Come Lets Get Some Beers
- stratum corneum
- stratum lucidium
- stratum granulosa
- stratum spinosum
- stratum basale
stratum corenum
corneocytes (dead kertainocytes) form outermost, protective layer
stratum lucidum
dead kertainocytes that are not yet fully differentiated into corenocytes
stratum granulosum
- kerationcytes secrete lamellar bodies to form water-barrier
stratum spinosum
important for strength (desomosomes) and immunity (Langerhans cells)
stratum basale
- deepest layer, the basement membrane –> separates it from dermis
- precursor kertinocyte stem cells proliferate her
- layer of skine protects it from UV radiation
