Q

functions of integumentary system

A
  1. regulate body temperature due to capillaries, hair
  2. protects body from environment
  3. gets info from environment via sensory organs
  4. excret water, salt, urea
  5. helps with immune system
  6. capillaries store blood
  7. create vitamin D when exposed to UV radiation structure

Q

epidermis

A

upper layer, no blood vessels, help waterproof our body
* skin created in bottom layer of epidermins, as they go upwards, they lose organells and start mass producing keratin

Q

dermis

A

connective tissue, has blood vessels/nerves/glands/hair follicles
* contains collagen, elastic fibers
* glands include sebaceous glands which create oil, sweat glands which create sweat
* 2 layers: papillary (more superfiical and responsible for finger prints), reticular (deeper and thicker, made of dense irregular connective tissue)

Q

hypodermis

A
  • deepest layer and contains larger nerves and blood vessels
  • loose CT and adipose (fat) tissue = main function is fat storage

Q

sudoriferous (sweat) gland

A
  • eccrine glands (sweat glands): over entire body and important for thermoregulation
  • apocrine glands: specific sites (secrete into hair follicle ex: ear wax or milk

Q

stratum basale

A
  • deepest layer, the basement membrane –> separates it from dermis
  • precursor kertinocyte stem cells proliferate her
