Injuries Flashcards
What is a static arch sprain/strain
Caused by prolonged stress on the feet which can be caused by flat training shoes
What is traumatic arch sprains/ strains
Over stretching the ligaments and/or tendons supporting the arches
What are the signs and symptoms and special test for a arch sprain/strain
Pain, swelling, ecchymosis and altered ambulation
What is the Signs and symptoms for a metatarsalgia injury and what is the special test/ treatment
Sharp, aching, burning pain under 2nd and 3rd MT head
Feels like a pebble in the foot
No special test but use metatarsal pad and refer to foot specialist
What is mortons neuroma and what is the signs and symptoms associated plus the special test
Thickening of tissue btw 3rd and 4 MT (may be a benign tumor)
Feeling a pebble in shoe also tingling or numbness
Special test is mortons test
What are the signs and symptoms and special test for sesamoiditis
Inflammation of the sesamoids of 1 phalanx
Sharp pain along 1 MT head with crepitus
Pain and weakness with flexion
No special test
What is 1st MTP capsulitis and what are the signs and symptoms and special test
Turf toe
Sharp pain at plantar aspect of 1st MTP
Weak hallicus flexion and pain with passive 1st MTP extension
Special test is 1st MTP axial compression with torsion
What is the MOI for acute and chronic 1st MTP capsulitis
Acute= forceful hyperextension of 1st MTP
Chronic = repetitive stress or dynamic overload
What are the two main types of arch sprains/ strains
Static and traumatic
What is retrocalcaneal bursitis
Inflammation of bursa btw Achilles’ tendon and calcaneus
What’s the signs and symptoms for retrocalcaneal bursitis
- Pain in heel with contact
- More pain with standing on toes
- red,warm, skin
What can a retrocalcaneal bursitis lead to
Lead to exostosis
What’s the MOI for plantar fasciitis for traumatic and chronic
Traumatic- forced ankle DF with toe extension
Chronic- persistent repetitive stresses resulting in microtears
What’s the signs and symptoms for plantar fasciitis
- usually unilateral but may be bilateral
- sharp pain the plantar part of foot
- worst in first few steps after awakening
What is calcaneal plantar exostosis
Abnormal bone growth due to calcium deposits that form when the plantar fascia pulls away from calcaneus
