Injuiees Part 2 Flashcards
What does extra-articular mean
Not involving joints (avulsion fracture)
What’s the signs and symptoms and MOI for calcaneal fracture
Signs and symptoms- pain in heel and can’t bear weight, swelling and ecchymosis of heel and ankle
MOI- violent fall from a height
What are the special test for calcaneal fracture
- percussion
- hoffa’s
What is MOI for calcaneal apophysitis and what type of patient is it common in
MOI: repetitive stress in area
Common in adolescent athletes
What’s the signs and symptoms for calcaneal apophysitis
- pain and swelling in heel
- limping or walking on ties
- difficulty in daily activity
What is the special test for calcaneal apophysitis
- pain when both sides of heel is squeezed
- refer for appropriate follow-up
What is MOI for Talar fracture and what is it
MOI- associated with hyperdorsiflexion
Uncommon but often result in avascular necrosis
What’s the signs and symptoms for Talar fracture and special test
Signs and symptoms-serve ankle pain with ROM, effusion and tenderness of the talus and subtalar joint
Special test - percussion
What are the different classification for Talar fractures
Type1- non displaced Talar neck fracture
Type2- displaced with subluxation if subtalar joint
Type3-displaced with dislocation of body from ankle mortise
Type4- displaced with subluxation or dislocation of talonavicular joint
What is the MOI for phalangeal fracture
- dropping heavy object on foot
- kicking or stubbing
- may accompany dorsal dislocation of DIP or PIP
What is the signs and symptoms for phalangeal fracture and special test
Signs and symptoms- pain, swelling, tenderness, LOF, ecchymosis
Special test-percussion and axial compression with torsion
What’s the MOI for an acute jones fracture
Traumatic plantarflexion/ inversion
What’s the MOI for chronic jones fracture
Persistent repetitive overexposure to mechincal stresses
What’s the signs and symptoms for jones fracture and special test
Signs and symptoms- heal slowly, pain, swelling and point tenderness at base of 5th
Special test- percussion and axial compression with torsion of 5th phalange
What is Lisfranc (mid foot) Injury
Result if midfoot bones are fracture or ligaments that support joints are sprained
What’s the MOI for Lisfranc injury
Falling forward in hyperplantarflexed and hypertorsion at midfoot during fall
What does intra-articular mean
Involving joints (more serve)
In what sports is Lisfranc injury common in
Football and soccer
What are the special test for Lisfranc injury
Midfoot drawer
Midfoot torsion
What is trigonum syndrome
Accessory bone that may develop behind talus; connected by fibrous band
What’s the MOI for trigonum syndrome
- plantarflexion and inversion ankle sprain
- repetitive plantarflexion
- common in ballet and soccer players
- causes compression btw tibia and calcaneus
What’s the signs and symptoms for trigonum syndrome
- aching pain in back of ankle while plantarflexing
- point tenderness in back of heel
