Influenza Flashcards
what is influenza
influenza is an acute viral infection in the URT
are there different types
yes-
A,B,C (A is the most prevalent)
what is the incubation period
1-4 days
who are at a risk for contracting influenza
elderly, the young, health care workers
Patho
mechanism of injury - gets into host cell - lysis
where is this viral injury occurring
epithelial cells that line the airways
what do you need to watch for
expansion to the LRT - bronchioles and alveolar
Complications
secondary bronchial infection
- bronchitis/ pneumonia
Manifestations
cough (100-150 km/hr)
fever
lethargy
myalgia (muscle pain)
Treatment
prophylaxis (immunizations)
prevent spread
- anti virals
what are the anti viral commonly used
Relenza: inhibits replication or viral particles and lysis of cells
Amantadine: prevents undoing of genetic material
