Chronic Bronchitis Flashcards
what is chronic bronchitis
inflammation and obstruction of the airway
what is chronic bronchitis mostly dt
smoking
characteristics
occurs in the larger airway first
- hypertrophy of submucosal glands
- hyper secretion of mucus
Then smaller airway problems
- increase in goblet cells (increase mucus)
Patho
excess mucus (perfect for bacterial growth) - mucociliary defences impaired - infection - bronchial wall inflammation - inflammatory damage - obstructs lumen - airway collapses - air trapped in part of lungs - decreased alveolar ventilation - perfusion imbalance - hypoxemia
what is V:P
the ventilation perfusion ratio
what does V stand for
volume or air that movies in and out per minute ex:4.2L/min
what does the P stand for
blood volume that moves to the vasculature in the lungs per minute ex: 5.5L/min
How do you then find the ratio
4.2L/5.5L = 0.8
Diagnosis
chronic productive cough
Manifestations
dyspnea impaired respiratory function - hypoxemia and hypercapnia increase sputum forceful breathing prolonged expiration
