COPD Flashcards
what is COPD stand for
chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
what is COPD
persistent inflammation that causes damage to airway, parenchyma, and vasculature
what are the two types of COPD that we look at
chronic bronchitis and emphysema
what is occurring with COPD
acute, recurrent, chronic obstruction of the airway
yes both acute AND chronic
Aetiology and risks
Smoking = increased mucus secretions
recurrent respiratory infections
aging
genetic defect of a1 antitrypsin (unable to synthesis antitrypsin)
what does smoking do
damages cilia
causes inflammation = tissue damage
what does the genetic defect cause
inability to synthesis a1 antitrypsin which is used to defend against proteases
Treatment
limit progression
stop smoking
avoid irritants
flu and pneumococcal vaccines
Short acting beta agonists (stimulate of Beta adrenergic receptor cells to cause bronchodilation)
anticholinergics (stops the neurotransmitter acetylcholine)
inhaled steroids (anti inflam)
long acting beta agonists
theophylline (broncho dilator)
