Etiology
Study of the cause of disease
Insidious
of gradual, subtle onset with cumulative and harmful effects
Idiopathic
Without a known cause
Systemic
Occurring throughout the body
Local
Occurring in a specific location within the body
Pathogenesis
Production or development of a diseased state (cellular events that lead to disease)
Diagnosis
Identification of disease (based on exam, symptoms, history, etc)
Prognosis
Prediction of probable outcome of disease based on condition of person and usual course of disease

List the types of growth changes in cells (6)
- Hypertrophy: Increase in SIZE of cells - Hyperplasia: Increase in NUMBER of cells - Atrophy: Decrease in SIZE of cells - Metaplasia: Cells change from one type to another - Involution/Hypoplasia: Cells return to normal size - Dysplasia: Abnormal growth in utero

Tx goals for acute vs chronic inflammation
ACUTE: - Goal: Reduce pain - Cool down hot/warm tissues (NEVER apply heat) - R.I.C.E. or P.R.I.C.E. (Protection, Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) CHRONIC: Goals: - Stimulate healing - Break up scar tissue to restore function
