Immunopathology 4 Flashcards
Homozygous vs Heterzygous
Homozygous: Identical genes from each parent for a trait (both dominant, both recessive)
Heterzygous: Different genes from each parent (1 dominant, 1 recessive)
Recessive expressed only with homozygous.
Dominant expressed with either hetero- or homo-.

What is a teratogen? What trimester is the fetus most vulnerable?
- Chemical or other agent causing both defects (X-ray, meds, alcohol, etc)
- 1st trimester

Symptoms and severity of cerebral palsy.
SYMPTOMS:
- Motor/cognitive deficits
- Hypotonia
- Paresis/plegia
- Spasticity
- Vision/speech/hearing problems

SYMPTOMS:
- Motor/cognitive deficits
- Hypotonia
- Paresis/plegia
- Spasticity
- Vision/speech/hearing problems
Symptoms will vary based on area of the brain effected. Can be caused by hypoxia, trauma, genetic defects, TBI

Define Scoliosis and the diff between structural and functional.
- Lateral curvature of the spine
Structural: Congenital (optimize cardiovascular and respiratory function)
Functional: Posture related (stretching, ex, bracing)

Describe the 3 types of spina bifida.
- Spina bifida occulta: mild, may be asymptomatic
- Meningocele: Meninges protrude, minimal damage
- Myelomeningocele: Severe; meninges and spinal cord protrude
Pathology of Duchenne’s Muscular Dystrophy
Symptoms
Prognosis
PT interventions
PATH:
Chromosomal trait effecting production of dystrophin
SYMPTOMS:
Progressive loss of muscle function
PROGNOSIS:
Fatal (late teens)
PT INTERVENTION: Breathing ex Balance training Strengthening Seating/Positioning Max function
