Cardiovascular 3 Flashcards
CVD vs PVD
Cardiovascular Disease
- Atherosclerosis in arteries of brain or coratids
Peripheral Vascular Disease
- atherosclerosis in arteries of extremities

Cardiovascular Disease

Peripheral Vascular Disease
- atherosclerosis in arteries of extremities
Symptoms of CVA
Slurred Speech Hemiparesis Stumbling Poor Cognition Facial Droop
PT contraindications for PVD
No heat application to involved areas
No massage to involved areas
- Increased circulation can cause the blood to pool and not be pumped out
- Burns are possible b/c blood holds heat
- Increase pressure on the arteries
What is DVT and how does it form?
Deep Vein Thrombosis: inflammation and clotting in vans caused by infection, trauma , immobilization, or surgery
Precautions after open heart surgery
No heavy lifting or driving x6 wks
Be careful with functional mobility
What is CABG?
Coronary Artery Bypass Graft
for severly occluded coronary artery
What is CABG?
Coronary Artery Bypass Graft
for severly occluded coronary artery
What is anemia and how might it affect PT?
Disorder of RBC (either RBC lifespan is shortened or there is not enough iron to make RBC)
May need to adjust PT program based on fatigue and dyspnea

Valve stenosis vs insufficiency vs prolapse
Valve Diseases:
- stenosis: valve can’t open fully due to scarring
- insufficiency: valve can’t close fully
- prolapse: cusps enlarge and project into atrium
S&S of hypovolemic shock
Body’s inability to supply blood to vital tissues
S&S: Rapid/weak pulse Rapid breathing Decreased BP and urine output Cognitive loss (confusion, anxiety)
