Q

What is the scrotum? (The male reproductive system)

A

A sac that contains the testes, they regulate temperature for sperm production. In cold weather the scrotum pulls closer to body to increase temperature. In warm temperature the scrotum moves away from the body to lower its temperature. In order for sperm production to occur, the testes must be 3-4 degrees cooler than 98.6

A

Two glands that secrete a nourishing fluid that keeps sperm alive an enables sperm to move

34
Q

What is the prostate gland? (The male reproductive system)

A

A large gland (the size of walnut) that secretes alkali which neutralizes acid in the urethra and in the vagina to keep the sperm alive

35
Q

What is Cowper’s gland? (The male reproductive system)

A

Two small glands that open in the urethra and secrete a clear sticky fluid that appears at the glans during sexual arousal contains sperm and is also alkaline. Secretions from seminal vesicles, prostate gland, and cowper’s gland combined make up semen which nourishes and gives the mobility to semen

36
Q

What is an erection? (The male reproductive system)

A

The hardening of the penis when sponge like muscles become filled with blood

37
Q

What is an ejaculation? (The male reproductive system)

A

The passageway of sperm and semen from the penis out through the urethra as a result of series of muscular contraction (the male orgasm) semen and urine both exit the urethra but never at the same time; regulated by the sphincter muscle

38
Q

What is the vulva? (The female reproductive system)

A

All the female genitalia

39
Q

What is the mons pubis? (The female reproductive system)

Small knob of tissue located at the upper juncture where the labia minora meet, partially hidden under a hood of skin- very sensitive- contains nerve endings

43
Q

What is the hymen? (The female reproductive system)

A

Thin membrane that stretched across the vaginal opening

44

What is the urethra? (The female reproductive system)

A

Found inside labia minora above vaginal opening. Where urine is excreted from

45
Q

What are the ovaries? (The female reproductive system)

A

Two glands that produce female sex hormones

46
Q

What is an ova? (The female reproductive system)

A

Egg cells. Females are born with certain numbers of eggs that will eventually develop and mature under oogenesis and be ovulated in the female’s lifetime

47
Q

What are the fallopian tubes? (The female reproductive system)

A

Two tubes that transport ova from every ovary to the uterus

48
Q

What is the uterus/womb? (The female reproductive system)

A

Receives fertilized egg and supports it during pregnancy. The fertilized egg becomes implanted on the wall of the uterus

49
Q

What is the cervix? (The female reproductive system)

A

Base of the uterus which bulges down into the vagina. Passageway for sperm to the uterus, childbirth, and menstrual flow. Collapsed muscular tube that has the ability to expand

50
Q

What is the endometrium? (The female reproductive system)

A

Inner lining of the uterus- becomes thick with blood

51
Q

What are the changes during puberty for males?

A

52
Q

What are the changes during puberty for females?

A

Development of breasts, pubic and underarm hair, wider hips, narrower waist, ovulation and menstruation, and onset of sexual desire

53
Q

What are gonads?

A

Reproductive glands
males- testes
females- ovaries

54
Q

What is puberty?

A

The period of physical development during which people became sexually mature and are able to produce children (9-13 for girls and 10-15 for boys)

55
Q

What is adolescence?

A

The period of time between puberty and full maturation

age 12-19

56
Q

What is the menstrual cycle?

A

Series of changes that occur on a monthly basis in a female’s body associated with hormone productions and ovulation (28 days)

57
Q

What is menarche?

A

The first menstrual cycle

58
Q

What is menstruation?

A

Release of tissue and blood (endometrium) out of the vagina and lasts from 3-7 days and continues until a women is in her 40s/50s

59
Q

What is dysmenorrhea?

A

Painful menstruation

60
Q

What is amenorrhea?

A

Absence of a menstrual cycle for a minimum of 3 months due to low percentage of body fat (Anorexia)

61
Q

What is menopause?

A

Cessation of menstruation due to decline in ovarian function. Occurs most frequently between age 45-50. Marks the end of child bearing

62
Q

What is the first phase of the menstruation cycle?

A

Day 1-4, Pituitary gland secretes FSH(Follicle Simulating Hormone) which stimulates growth of follicular cells in the ovaries. Follicular cells contain immature egg cells. Menstruation flow from previous cycle begins to flow

63
Q

What is the second phase of the menstruation cycle?

A

Day 5-12, Follicle produces estrogen to prepare uterus for egg. Uterus starts to thicken with blood; follicle produces a mature egg cell

64
Q

What is the third phase of the menstruation cycle?

A

Day 13-14, Ovulation: egg is released from ovary into fallopian tube. Empty follicle becomes corpus luteum: temporary gland that secretes progesterone which is a hormone that stimulates the endometrium to thicken. If fertilization occurs, the corpus luteum continues producing progesterone during pregnancy. If no fertilization occurs, the corpus luteum dies and breaks down and cells in endometrium break down and eventually menstruation occurs

65
Q

What is the fourth phase of the menstruation cycle?

A

Day 15-20, Cilia (hair that helps push things through. Different than regular hair) push ova( plural and singular is ovum) through fallopian tube into uterus

66
Q

What is the fifth phase of the menstruation cycle?

A

Day 21-28, If no fertilization then cells in endometrium gradually die and break down. Blood flow begins unfertilized egg becomes part of the menstrual flow and then back to phase 1

A

STD= Sexually transmitted disease
STI= Sexually Transmitted Infection
STD=STI

70

71
Q

What is AIDS?

A

a disease caused by a virus that cripples a person’s immune system. Not only sexually transmitted but it can spread through sharing infected equipment for injecting drugs, tattooing, or ear piercing

72
Q

What is HIV?

A

Attacks the body’s immune system. No cure and leads to AIDS

73
Q

What can you do to have safe sex?

A

Safe sex is no sex. (Abstinence). There’s no such thing as safe sex but safer sex.

74
Q

What is the condom for males?

A

Thin sheath made of rubber (latex or polyurethane) that is placed over the erect penis to retain semen upon ejaculation. Pinch the top so it doesn’t burst. Remove by pulling it off while holding the penis so nothing leaks out. Lubricants, only the water bases not the oil base because it will wear out the rubber. Never use more than one condom at a time

75
Q

What are some effects of the condom for males?

A

Prevent pregnancy, reduces the risk of STDs, 98% effective if used properly. 88% effective with “average” use

76
Q

What is the condom for females?

A

larger than the male condom. Has a ring inside of it. You insert it into the vagina

77
Q

What is a diaphragm

A

made of soft rubber and shaped like a cup. It covers the cervix, not effective against STDs. Acts as a barrier to prevent sperm from entering the uterus Spermicide is placed in the middle and around the edges. Must be fitted by a doctor and left in place for 6-8 hours after sexual intercourse. Not effective against STDs

78
Q

What are oral contraceptives?

A

Birth control pill/patch/shot. It raises the levels of estrogen and tricks body into thinking its pregnant so ovulation does not occur. It can fail if you forget or if you take it a different time each day.

79
Q

What is IUD/Intrauterine device

A

The doctor inserts it and removes it 1-4 years it irritates the uterus so a fertilized egg won’t be able to implant itself on the walls of the uterus

80
Q

What are some surgical options for safer sex?

A

Vasectomy for males where they cut the vas deferens

Tubal ligation for females where the fallopian tubes are sealed

81
