What is a mental disorder?
An illness of the mind that can affect the thoughts, feelings and behaviors of a person, preventing him/her from leading a happy, healthful, and productive life
What is stigma?
A negative association or “bad wrap”
What is an anxiety disorder?
An illness in which real, imagined, or persistent fears prevent a person from enjoying life. Includes phobias, OCD, panic disorders, and PTSD
What is a phobia?
A specific fear that is so strong, a person goes to extreme measures to avoid the fear producing object or activity
Ex: Acrophobia (heights) and Claustrophobia (enclosed space)
What is an organic disorder?
One that is clearly caused by a physical illness or an injury that affects the brain
Ex: Brain tumors, alcoholism, syphilis, meningitis, lupus, and stroke
What is an Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
A person is trapped in a pattern of repeated behaviors or thoughts
What is an obsession?
Persistent, recurrent, unwanted, thoughts, or ideas that keep people from thinking about other things
What is compulsions?
Urgent, repeated, irresistible behaviors
What are panic disorders?
Fear or anxiety prevails and gets in the way of functioning and enjoying life. Panic attacks are accompanied by severe symptoms such as trembling, a racing heartbeat, shortness of breath, dizziness, or a fear or losing control or even dying
What is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)?
A person who has experienced or witnessed a traumatic event feels severe and long lasting aftereffects. Common among veterans of military combat, rape survivors, and survivors of natural disasters such as floods or unnatural disasters such as plane crashes.
What are the symptoms of PTSD?
Flashbacks, nightmares, emotional numbness, dreams about the event, sleeplessness, feelings of guilt, or an extreme reaction to an image or sound that reminds the person of the event.
What is Schizophrenia?
Serious mental disorder meaning “split mind”. Untreated Schizophrenia may cause them to behave inappropriately, exhibit abnormal emotional responses, or even show no emotional response at all. Some sufferers hallucinate, hear voices, talk to themselves, or act in an odd manner. Paranoid Schizophrenics mistrust and are often suspicious of others
What is clinical depression?
A disorder in which feelings of sadness, hopelessness or despair last for more than a few weeks and interfere with daily activities and interests. Often runs in families; can be a symptom substance abuse, alcoholism, or drug addiction
What is Bipolar disorder?
Also known as Manic depression and it is a psychological illness characterized by extreme mood swings between depression and extreme happiness, or mania
What are the stages of grief?
Denial(This is not real, it’s not really happening), Anger (being mad at everyone and everything), Bargaining (trying to make a deal with “god”- I’ll be a better person if.), Depression (Feeling hopeless and helpless, silence and withdrawal), Acceptance (Face reality, can involve a sense of regaining power)
What is defense mechanism?
Strategy used to deal with strong feelings and stressful or emotional situations
What is repression?
involuntary unconscious pushing of unpleasant feeling below the surface and out of conscious thought
What is rationalization?
Making excuses to try and explain a situation or behavior rather than directly taking responsibility for it
Ex; buy expensive item because it was on sale
What is regression?
Reverting, or turning back to behaviors more characteristic of an earlier stage of development rather than dealing with the conflict in a more mature manner
ex: sucking thumb
What is denial?
Unconscious, involuntary lack of acknowledgement of something
What is compensation?
wanting to cover up weakness and mistakes by making up for them through gift giving, hard work, or other extreme efforts
ex: studying extra hard for an exam after failing the last one
What is displacement?
Transfer feelings on an object or person totally unrelated
ex: yell at sibling while mad at parent
What is conversion?
Transferring a mental conflict into a physical symptom
ex: getting sick on the first day of school

Tube-like male organ of sexual intercourse, reproduction and urination. Also deposits sperm in the vagina
What is the glans? (The male reproductive system)
Head of penis, contains many nerve endings

Tube containing semen and urine
What is the scrotum? (The male reproductive system)
A sac that contains the testes, they regulate temperature for sperm production. In cold weather the scrotum pulls closer to body to increase temperature. In warm temperature the scrotum moves away from the body to lower its temperature. In order for sperm production to occur, the testes must be 3-4 degrees cooler than 98.6
What are the testes? (The male reproductive system)
Two small egg shaped organs that lie in the scrotum and produce sperm and testosterone. Testis is singular and scrotum=testicle
What is the seminiferous tubules? (The male reproductive system)
A network of coiled tubes where sperm mature
What is the epididymis? (The male reproductive system)
A highly coiled structure located on the back side of each of the testes; stores newly produced sperm.
What is the vas deferens? (The male reproductive system)
Two long thin tubes that serve as passageway for sperm; connects epididymis with urethra.
