What is IBS?

A

Is a GI condition that causes disorders such as stomach pain, and alterations in BM. The causes are uncertain and can be related to diet and nutrition, bacteria (infection) and moods (anxiety).

What is IBD?

A

It is a collection of GI disorders such as Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis. Onset is from 15-25yrs. Causes can be linked to GI inflammatory response or genetics. Prone to colon cancer.

IBS Diagnosis/ Assessment

A

Blood tests (underlying issues related)
Stool samples (bacteria), endoscopic investigations like colonoscopy, discussions about diet and nutrition, and health history.

IBS Management

A

Physical activity, fibre (diet/ nutrition) knowledge of triggers, Antibiotics, laxatives, anti-diarrhoea meds, pain relief, Reduction of alcohol and certain foods.
Suport and education.

IBD S+S (Crohn/ Ulcerative Colitis)

A

Crohn’s: Nausea, pain, weight loss, diarrhea and bleeding.
Ulcerative colitis: Blood in stool, mucus stool, loss of appetite, pain.

Colonoscopy, Xrays, HX, Bowel sounds, physical examination, Stool sample, bloods.

IBD: Management

A

Antibiotics, Corticord steroids, Colectomy (removal of the colon), ileostomy (ileum stoma), Goals, attain normal BM, reduce pain, dehydration. monitor to prevent complications (skin breakdown).

A

Crohn’s: the inflammation of parts of the GI (can be throughout the GI tract).
Ulcerative colitis: Continous inflammation of the colon.
