How can HIV/AIDS be transmitted?
A
- sexual contact (most common)
- before birth or -during delivery, -during breastfeeding
- sharing contaminated needles and syringes

What is the pathophysiology of AIDS?
A
- virus gains entry to the cells by attaching to the CD4 receptor and a co-receptor via its envelope glycoproteins
- Once integrated into the cellular DNA the provirus resides in the nucleus of infected cells
- Within a few weeks of infection there is a high level of viral replication
- decline in CD4 T cells
