  • abnormal and permanent enlargement of alveoli without fibrosis
  • loss of supporting elastic tissue causes airway collapse, obstructing expiration

A
  • ROS causes neutrophils to release elastases or directly damages elastic tissue
  • ROS inhibits anti-proteases
