Hindbrain Rhombencephalon Flashcards
What are the components of the Hindbrain (Rhombencephalon)
Cerebellum
Pons
Medulla Oblongata
What is the cerebellum and its major function?
Cerebellum (Metencephalon)
- Responsible fine tuning of movement
- Assists in maintaining posture and balance by controlling muscle tone and the positioning of extremities in space.
Controls the ability for controlling rapid alternating movements.
-The cerebellum is responsible for coordination and motor behavior, in addition to balance, motor learning, and motor control.-
What are the divisions of the cerebellum
- Anterior
- Posterior
- Flocculonodular
[the fourth ventricle lays anterior to the lobes]
What are the deficits to the cerebellum?
Damage to one side of the cerebellum produces ipsilateral impairments to the body.
Ataxia
Nystagmus
Tremor
Hypermetria
Poor Coordination
Deficits to Postural Reflexes: Balance and Equilibrium depending on lesion location
What is the Pons and its major functioning?
(also metencephalon)
- Assists in regulation of Respiration Rate
- Is associated with orientation of the head with with visual and auditory stimuli.
What is the Medulla Oblongata and its major functions?
(Myelencephalon)
- Composed of white matter on the surface and gray matter interiorly.
- influences ANS, regulation of Respiration and HR (Respiration Rate also influenced by the Pons)
What Cranial Nerves Originate off of the Medulla Oblongata?
CN:
- IX
- X
- XI
- XII
[9 - 12]
What Cranial Nerves Originate of the Pons
CN
- V
- VI
- VII
- VIII
[5 - 8]
What Reflex Centers can be found in the Medulla Oblongata?
Reflex Centers for:
- Vomiting
- Coughing
- Sneezing
