Healthy Gingiva Flashcards
What does healthy gingiva have?
A knife-like margin and is a coral pink or pigmented color, with smooth gingival topography, firm tissue
What happens to the surface of the gingiva as periodontal disease progresses?
The surface features become irregular and the even flow from tooth to tooth is lost.
What is the normal minimal sulcular depth in dogs?
2 to 3 mm
What is the normal minimal sulcular depth in cats?
0.5 to 1 mm
What is noted in early type 1 early gingivitis?
Redness at the gingival crest
no radiographic changes
Reversible with treatment
What is noted with advanced gingivitis type 2?
Increased in inflammation with edema
Subgingival plaque
No root exposure or radiographic changes
Reversible with treatment
What classifies periodontal disease/perodontitis?
Inflammatory destruction of tissues
Irreversible damage
Results in loss of attachment/support structures
What are the pathologic mechanisms of perodontitis?
direct injury by plaque bacteria
Indirect injury by plaque bacteria via inflammation
What classifies Type 3 early periodontitis?
Moderate attachment loss with 10%-30% loss of bone support
Gingival hemorrhage with gentle probing
Mild radiographic changes
