Head and Neck Flashcards
Infratemporal fossa
Area between posterior aspect of mandible and lateral plate of pterygoid process.
Conduit for mandibular nerve V3
Pterygopalatine fossa
Posterior to maxilla
Communicates with cranial cavity, infratemporal fossa, orbit, nasal cavity and oral cavity.
Conduit for maxillary nerve V2
Compartments of the neck
4 compartments - vertebral, visceral, two vascular
Vertebral compartment of neck
Cervical vertebrae, associated postural muscles
Visceral compartment of neck
Thyroid, parathyroid and thymus, and parts of respiratory and digestive tracts between head and thorax
Vascular compartments of neck
Major blood vessels and vagus nerve
larynx
Attached below to top of trachea and above by a flexible membrane to to the hyoid bone (which is attached to the floor of the oral cavity)
Laryngeal inlet is tilted posteriorly and is continuous with the pharynx
Muscles in head
Extra-ocular Muscles of middle ear Muscles of facial expression Muscles of mastication Muscles of soft palate Muscles of tongue
Muscles in neck
Muscles of pharynx
Muscles of larynx
Strap muscles (position larynx and hyoid bone in neck)
Muscles of outer cervical collar (move the head and upper limb)
Postural muscles in muscular compartment (position the head and neck)
Vertebrae level C3-4
Superior border of thyroid cartilage
Common carotid artery bifurcates into internal and external carotid arteries
Vertebrae level C5 and C6
Lower limit of pharynx and larynx
Superior limit of trachea and oesophagus
Indentation between cricoid cartilage of larynx and first tracheal ring can be palpated
Soft palate
Opens and closes oropharyngeal isthmus (opening between oral cavity and oropharynx)
Epiglottis
Opens and closes laryngeal inlet
Anterior triangle structures
Between head and thorax
Posterior triangle structures
axillary inlet - structures that pass into and out of upper limb
