Face Flashcards
Parotid duct pathway
Crosses face superficial to masseter, pierces buccinator, opens into oral cavity near second upper molar tooth
Structures passing deep to parotid gland
Facial nerve
external carotid artery
retromandibular vein and its tributaries
Five branches of facial nerve
Temporal Zygomatic Buccal Marginal mandibular Cervical
External carotid artery and parotid gland
Passes deep to parotid gland
As it ascends, gives off posterior auricular branch before dividing into its two terminal branches - superficial temporal and maxillary artery
Maxillary artery passes horizontally deep to mandible
Superficial temporal artery continues superiorly and emerges from upper border of gland after giving off transverse facial artery
Retromandibular vein
Formed from superficial temporal and maxillary vein and passes inferiorly in substance of parotid gland
Sensory innervation of parotid gland
Auriculotemporal nerve which is a branch of mandibular nerve V3
Auriculotemporal nerve also carries secretomotor fibers to parotid gland (postganglionic parasympathetic). Preganglionic parasympathetic to parotid comes through otic gland from glossopharyngeal nerve
V1 branches that innervate face
supra-orbital and supratrochlear nerves
infratrochlear nerve
lacrimal nerve
external nasal nerve
V2 branches that innervate face
zygomaticotemporal branch
zygomaticofacial branch
infra-orbital nerve
V3 branches that innervate face
auriculotemporal nerve (posterior to TMJ, passes through parotid glands)
buccal nerve
mental nerve
Facial vein connections with venous channels passing into deeper regions of head
ophthalmic vein near orbit
veins draining into infra-orbital foramen
Deep facial vein
Submental nodes
inferior and posterior to chin
drain from medial part of lower lip and chin bilaterally
Submandibular nodes
superficial to submandibular gland
drain from medial part of cheek, upper lip, lateral part of lower lip
Pre-auricular and parotid nodes
most of the eyelids, a part of external nose and lateral part of cheek
