Guiding Principle 4: Collaborate and Promote Visibility Flashcards
Definition: Collaborate and Promote Visibility
Achieving objectives requires information, understanding, and trust.
Work and consequences should be made visible, hidden agendas should be avoided, and information should be shared to the greatest degree possible.
Recognition of the need for genuine collaboration has been one of the driving factors in the evolution of what is now known as DevOps.
COLLABORATION DOESN’T MEAN CONSENSUS
Keep in mind
When implementing this principle:
Whom to collaborate with - customers, team
Communication for improvement
Increasing urgency through visibility
Application: Collaborate and Promote Visibility
To apply “collaborate and promote visibility” successfully, consider this advice:
Collaboration does not mean consensus
Communicate in a way the audience can hear (what matters to the audience) - “soft skills, or people skills for IT professionals”
- Senior mgmt likes short and to the point, graphs, pictures
- Middle mgmt likes to get the whole picture and details
(operational vs. strategic)
Decisions can only be made on visible, accurate data
Avoiding Visibility Issues
To avoid visibility issues, the organization needs to perform critical analysis activities such as:
Understanding the flow of work in progress
Identifying bottlenecks, as well as excess capacity
Uncovering waste
