Q

Thoracic Body Cavity-Thoracic Inlet

A

Defines the cranial boundary of TBC
Allows passageway of for esophagus, trachea, and blood vessels and nerves
Boundaries: dorsal (first thoracic vertebrae)

Q

TBC-Sternum

A
The ventral boundary of the TBC
Provides attachment to the costal cartilages of the sternal ribs
Consists of three anatomical parts
 Cranial:manubrium
Middle: body
Caudal:meta sternum

Q

TBC- pectoral girdle

A

Attachment to the shoulder blade to the TBC is muscle, primarily, connective tissue
Rats and humans possess a clavicle which articulates with the scapula and manubrium forming a true bony connection with the TBC

Q

TBC-Thoracic Vertebrae

A

Defines the dorsal boundary of the TBC, including the dorsal end of each rib and the associated muscle and connective tissue
It is marked dorsally by well developed spinous processes(withers)

Q

TBC-diaphragm

A

Defines the caudal boundary of the TBC
Consists of connective tissue in the center and striated muscle extending from the connective tissue to the periphery
Muscle attachments include….
Costal:cartilage of the last few sternal ribs and behind this is the ribs at an increasing distance from their sternal ends
Sternal:upper surface of the xiphoid cartilage
LumbAr:attached to first few lumbar vertebrae by means of ligament

Q

TBC-Serous Membranes

A

Consists of a thin layer of connective tissue and single layer of epithelial cells cemented on it
Function: to secrete serous fluid for lubrication
Pleura:the major serous membrane of the TBC
-parietal layer:layer of pleura that lines the inner wall of the TBC
-visceral layer:layer of pleura that covers the lungs
-mediastinum:double layer of pleura formed by junction of right and left serous sacs near the midline of the thorax
Pericardium: serous membrane that surrounds the heart
-parietal layer:forms the pericardial sac
-visceral layer:found on surface of the heart
