Blood And Body Fluids Flashcards
Anemia
A condition in which the number of erythrocytes, or the hemoglobin content of the erythrocytes is below normal (low oxygen carrying capacity of the blood)
Exsanguination
Removal of blood, especially at the time of slaughter
Polycythemia
The presence of an abnormally high number of erythrocytes in the circulating blood
Hemoconcentration
A decrease in the percentage of plasma in the circulatory blood resulting in a concentration of erythrocytes
Blood and Other Body Fluids- definition
chief nutrient and gaseous transfer fluid of the body
Blood and Other Body Fluids-functions
Transports... Oxygen and carbon dioxide Ions Wastes Hormones Heat
Defense of the body against infections and other foreign materials
Blood and Other Body Fluids-Blood Volume
6-10% animals weight
Blood and Other Body Fluids-blood constituents
Formed elements: erythrocytes (RBC)
Leukocytes (WBC)
Thrombocytes (platelets)
Fluid: plasma
Plasma clotting factors- serum
Formed Elements: Red blood cells
Transports oxygen and carbon dioxide Concentration: millions/micrometers Fetal production RBC FORMATION: Erythropoiesis: controlled by erythropoietin which is produced by the kidneys and liver in response to oxygen deficiency, which in turn, acts upon the bone marrow to increase the production of red blood cells
Substances needed for Erythropoiesis
Vitamin b12 Folic acid Copper Amino acids Energy Water
RBC composition
65% water, 33% hemoglobin, terminally differentiated
Hemoglobin: consists of four polypeptides coupled to four porphyria or heme moieties …. One atom of iron at the center of each heme…one molecule of oxygen can bind to each heme
RED BLOOD CELLS: Life span
Approx 120 days
Gets broken down in blood stream…does not regenerate
Anemia
Low oxygen carried capacity of blood
Causes reduced red blood cell numbers, hemoglobin concentration
