- Developing Strategies
Directing Attention
Goals can focus performers on what needs to be done to improve performance
Regulating effort put into a task
Ensures there is no wasted effort on activities or movements that are unnecessary
Ensuring effort is sustained until goal reached
Goals motivate performers to continue their efforts and not give up easily
Developing strategies to reach goals
Motivates and makes the difference between winning & losing.
SMART Goal Setting
- Specific
- Measurable
- Achievable
- Recorded
- Time specific
Specific
goals must be clear & specific
Measurable
Goals need to be assessed so should be measurable to gauge improvement
Knowing how well you’re doing can be motivating
Achievable
Must be within reach so they remain highly motivated
If goal is too easy/hard this can demotivate
Recorded
As goals are achieved they can be crossed off
This motivates to press on to the next goal
Time Specific
Split into short term goals leading to long term ones
This step-by-step approach ensures goal remains realistic & achievable
Different types of goals
- Outcome goals
- Performance goals
- Process-Orientated goals
Outcome goals
Relate to the end result
E.g. to win the competition
Performance Goals
- Concerned with performance against other performances
- E.g. bettering lap time
- May affect outcome goals
Process-Orientated Goals
Concentrate on technique and tactics
What the performer has to do to be more successful
