Attribution Flashcards
Attribution
The reasons/justifications/excuses that we give for winning/losing in comps are likely to affect how we feel & motivation levels
Weiner’s model
Locus of casualty
- Internal
- External
Stability dimension
- Stable
- Unstable
- Ability (i/s)
- Task difficulty (e/s)
- Effort (i/u)
- Luck (e/u)
Self serving bias
A persons tendency to attribute their failures to external reasons
Excuse to explain poor performance
e.g. I lost because the floor was slippy
Controllability
Whether attributions are under the control of performer/others or whether they are uncontrollable (i.e. nothing can be done by anyone - luck/weather)
Learnt helplessness
Belief that failure is inevitable
Feelings of hopelessness when facing either:
- Specific situs (specific LH)
- Group of situs (global LH)
Low achievers attribute failure to external/uncontrollable factors
Mastery Orientation
- An individual motivated by becoming an expert/master in skill development
- Reason for failure = internal/controllable factors
- Seek perfection, to develop competence, & to learn new skills
Attribution retraining
- Optimise sports performance
- Turn LH into MO
