Anxiety
A negative emotional state closely linked with arousal
Types of anxiety
State
Trait
State anxiety
Immediate but temporary level of anxiety in particular situ
Trait anxiety
Enduring in an individual
Occurs often and is part of the individuals way of thinking
A pre-disposition to react to situs with apprehension

- Individual differences in way people interact with situation
- E.g. league/friendly match

- Different types of anxiety an they can be treated in different ways.

- High trait = high state
Factor 3 of competition anxiety
- General or specific anxiety
- High A trait = high anxious in some stressful situs (but not all – anxiety varies)
- Anxious when training but not in match with large crowd = COMPETITIVE TRAIT ANXIETY
Factor 4 of competition anxiety
- The competition process
- Involves interaction between personality factors, competitive trait anxiety, and situation
- This interaction affects behaviour and may cause state anxiety
Competitive state anxiety
Tendency to perceive competitive situs as threatening and respond with feelings of apprehension and tension
Sport Competition Anxiety Test (SCAT)
- Self report questionnaire
- Assess anxiety in competition
- Measures competitive trait anxiety
- Useful for predicting how performer will be in future comps
Zone of Optimal Functioning
- Low ZOF –> perform well under low arousal
- Moderate –> requires some arousal to perform best
- High –> require more arousal to perform well
Achieving the ‘in zone’ for top performers
- Be relaxed
- Be confident
- Be completely focused
- Activity is effortless
- Movements are automatic
