Arousal Flashcards
1
Q
Arousal
A
- Motivation represents the intensity and direction of behaviour
- Arousal = the intensity aspect of motivation
- Effects can be positive/negative
- A physiological and psychological state of alertness
2
Q
Physiological impact of arousal
A
- Increased HR
- Breathing
- Sweaty
3
Q
Psychological impact of arousal
A
- Worry
- Anxiousness
4
Q
Raising arousal causes…
A
A state of readiness to perform
If we don’t control it, we wont perform at our best
5
Q
Drive theory
A
- Performance increases in proportion to arousal
- High arousal = high performance
- P=f(HD)
- If dominant response correct, performance enhanced
- Drive reduction = drive reduced when individuals lose motivation
6
Q
Inverted U Theory
A
- Optimal level of arousal
- If over aroused, become anxious and performance declines
- Not Physic/Psycho ready to perform
- Sport specific
- More skilled = higher arousal
- More extrovert = higher arousal for optimum performance
7
Q
Catastrophe Theory
A
- Dramatic decline in performance when arousal above optimal
- Somatic arousal
- Cognitive arousal
- High S & C = rapid decrease in performance
- High C + low S = performance can recover
8
Q
Reticular Activating System
A
- Regulates levels of arousal
- Enhance/inhibit sensory stimuli
