Confidence and Self-Efficacy Flashcards
Sports confidence
The belief in your ability to complete a skill/task in sports
e.g. I am good at sport
Self-Efficacy
The self-confidence we have in a situation
e.g. players confidence in scoring penalties in school match but not in cup match
Self-Esteem
the feeling of self worth that determines how valuable we and competent we feel
High level of sports confidence can have positive impacts:
- i^ quality of performance & success –> due to i^ participation & persistence
- i^ participation –> due to expectation of success & therefore motivation/enjoyment
- i^ self-esteem –> due to experiencing success
Increased quality of performance & success due to…
increased participation and persistance
Increased participation due to…
expectation of success and therefore enjoyment/motivation
Increased self-esteem due to…
experiencing success
Children with + self-esteem have:
- Reduced anxiety
- More optimistic outlook on life
- Fewer interpersonal problems
- Less chance of conforming to social pressure
- Better body image
- Less likely to engage in risky behaviours (e.g. drugs)
Children with – self-esteem more likely to:
- Be depressed
- Eating disorders
- Engage in risk behaviour
- Not participate in PE/sports
- Get bullied / become bullies
Impact on performance if sport confidence high:
- More motivated to achieve desired outcome
- Make firm decisions that will have more positive outcome
- Player with high sports confidence more likely to be successful than someone with low
Impact of sports confidence on Participation:
- Low sc = shy away from activities & avoid competitive situs
- High = participate with other people, don’t feel inhibited, and feel more able to engage in team activities
Impact of sports confidence on Self-Esteem:
- High sc = high se
- Positive impact on sport (demands high levels of drive)
- Low sc = low se
- Feel they have no value on team / individual situ
Aspects of Vealey Sports Confidence Model
- Sporting Context
- Self-Confidence Trait OR Competitive Orientation
- Self-Confidence State
- Behavioural Response (performance of skill)
- Subjective Outcome
Explaining the process of Vealey Sports Confidence Model
- Existing level of sports confidence (SC-trait) and competitiveness
- Levels of these effect how much SC-state we can have during comp situ
- SC-state dictates behaviour shown & skill level of performance
- High SC-state = behaviour confident = performance improves
- Low SC-state = tentative performance / incorrect
- After performance we have satisfaction/disappointment
- Result will affect SC-trait –> more success = more confidence = more success
Bandura’s Theory of Self-Efficacy
4 factors:
- Performance accomplishment (past experiences)
- Vicarious experiences (modelling by others)
- Social persuasion (coaching & evaluative feedback)
- Physiological & emotional states
These lead to Self-Efficacy Judgements and then to Behaviour/Performance
Performance accomplishment
If success is experienced in past (if attributed to controllable factors) then self confidence will be high
Vicarious Experiences
This reflex’s previous observations.
If we watch others perform and have success, then we are more likely to experience high self-efficacy
(providing performers observed are similar standard)
Social Persuasion (verbal persuasion)
Encouraged to try a particular activity, our confidence in that situ increases
The effectiveness will depend on who is encouraging us
(family/friends/role models/high status person)
Physiological and Emotional State
Our perception of how aroused we are will affect our confidence in a particular situ
If we have effective strategies to control our arousal levels, we will have higher self-efficacy
