increases motivation as target to aim for which requires effort to reach

when athlete sets a goal to better their own performance rather than comparing with others

e.g running a PB in 100m race

goals should be clear and precise
shuld be specific to perfomer and sport

e.g impoving defense is too general
should be imporing your left shoulder tackles by making firmer contact is a specific goal
measurable
perfomer should have access to statistics, data
allows perfomer to see how much progress they have made
achievable
perfomer should be able to reach their goal
willigness to extend the target can be achieved
realsitic
goal set should be realsitic
too ambitious, could create motivation to be lost when not achieved
time bound
should be clear deadline so that coach and player can assess if th goal has been reached

perfomer and coach should evaluate how and when the goal was achieved so that future attempts can beassessed
