how is the Olympic oath still relevant
no prize money at olympic games
shows sportsmanship, amateurism still valued
athletes who have been found cheating have been disqualified
athletes who have been found taking drugs have had medals removed e.g Marion Jones got medals taken away after testing positive for drugs
acts of sportsmanship still valued and celebrated
e.g. drug cheat Justin Gatlin often booed by spectators
how is Olympic oath NOT relevant
professionalism has increased/greater extrinsic rewards/more money involved/commercialisation
greater pressure from media to win e.g. at a home Olympics
increase in doping/violent play/cheating/abusive language
sportsmanship
following unwritten rules of etiquette/fair play
playing by the spirit of the game

shaking hands with an opponent after a contest
helping injured opponent back to their feet
kicking ball out of play so opponent can receive treatment
how is sportmanship still shown today
fair play rewards used by national governing
still encouraged and highlighted in media
players are punished for unsportmanship behaviour e.g red and yellow cards in football
gamesmanship
bending the rules without actually breaking them to gain an advantage
from win at all costs mentallity
example of gamesmanship in sport
e.g time wasting in game of football when winning 1-0
deliberately diving to win a penalty
why does gamesmanship still take place
commercialisation and financial rewards
difficult to maintain sportsmanship when rewards so high
what is deviance
behaviour which goes against society’s norms and values
negative deviance
including doping, violence against a opponent
postive deviance
going against norms of society but with no intent to harm
e.g training when injured
following excessive diet plan
win ethic
win at all costs mentality
coming second isn’t an option, outcome is all that matters
