bernoulli principle Flashcards
what happens when discus is thrown
experiences an upward lift force during flight
enabbles discus to stay in air for longer
therefore, increasing the hoizontal distance it travels
more lift projectile has, longer it stays in air, longer horizontal distance travelled
bernouli principle
where air molecules exert less pressure, they travel faster and more pressure they travel slower
obernouli principle for a discus throw
angle of attack is important
angle of attack changes the flow of the air so that
air that travles at the top of the discus have to travl further, so faster velcoity but lower prressure
whereas, air that travles below discus, has a shorter ditance, slow velocity, high pressure
this high pressure crerates an upward lift force, allowing disuc to stay in air for longer, increasing horizontal distance travelled
if angle of attack too great, lift is reeduced and drag increased causing discus to stall
study tip: below discus=SSH
shprter diatnce, slower velocity, higher pressure to allow upward lift force to take place
downward lift force
can be explained in cyclists, skiers, racing cars
air travels above the car travels a shorter ditance than air underneath
air above car travles shorter distance, slower velocity at higher pressure
air below car trevals further diatnce, faaster velocity, low pressure
high pressure above the cyclist creates a downward lift force and allows bike to maintain firm grip on track
creates downward direction of lift force
