GEN BIO: PLANTS AND PHOTOSYNTHESIS Flashcards
Photosynthesis
-Autotrophs produce their own organic molecules from inorganic molecules
-the pigment chlorophyll, which is located in the chloroplast of plant cells, absorbs light energy
-this light energy in turn drives the synthesis of food molecules.
Photosynthesis Reaction
6CO2+6H2O + light energy —> C6H12O6 + 6O2
Carbon dioxide + water + light energy —> carbohydrates +oxygen
[PLANT PARTS]
Cuticle
Waxy layer that covers the stems and leaves and prevents water loss through evaporation
[PLANT PARTS]
Stomates
Pores on the lower surface of the leaves that allow carbon dioxide to enter and oxygen to release during photosynthesis without losing too much water
[PLANT PARTS]
Angiosperms (the flower in flowering plants)
Responsible for reproduction
[PLANT PARTS]
Sepals
Encase the flower before it blooms
[PLANT PARTS]
Petals
Attract pollinators
[PLANT PARTS]
In the center of the flower are the stamen and pistils
Stamen
Consist of the filament, which supports the anther, where pollen is produced
[PLANT PARTS]
In the center of the flower are the stamen and pistils
Pistil
Consists of the stigma (which receives pollen), the style (which leads to the ovary), and the ovary (which contains the ovules and where fertilization occurs)
[PLANT PARTS]
After fertilization, what do the ovules within the ovary develop into?
Seeds
[PLANT PARTS]
After fertilization, what happens?
The ovules within the ovaries develop into seeds and the walls of the ovary thicken to protect the seed, this thick fleshy protective layer is FRUIT
