CHEMISTRY: MIXTURES, TINCTURES, AND EMULSIONS Flashcards
Mixture
Differes from a substance in that its composition may vary from one sample to the next
Ex. Of mixtures: soil, air, and seawater
[mixture]
Homogeneous mixture
-composition does not vary within the sample
-can be separated by physical means such as distillation or chromatography
Ex. A solution, such as a tbs. of sugar thoroughly dissolved in a cup of hot water—in this solution, each sample of the water should contain an equal amount of dissolved sugar
Solution
-Solvent—substance that does the dissolving
-Solute—substance being dissolved
Tincture
Solution in which the solvent is alcohol
Ex. Tincture of iodine cont. iodine dissolved in alcohol
[mixture]
Heterogeneous mixture
-composition may vary within a sample
-can be separated by physical means such as filtration
-ex. An EMULSION refers to a liquid dispersed in another liquid in which it is not soluble (solubility is the ability of a solute to dissolve in a particular solvent)
-ex. Oil and vinegar
-the addition of certain substances called EMULSIFIERS, stabilizer emulsions
-ex. Adding egg to oil and vinegar to make mayo
Solubility
solubility is the ability of a solute to dissolve in a particular solvent)
