A&P: EXCRETION Flashcards
Kidneys
1/2
-principal excretory organs of the body
-outer portion of the kidneys is the renal cortex, and the inner portion is called the renal medulla
-the functional unit of the kidney is the nephron, which consists of the glomerulus, Bowman’s capsule, the proximal convoluted tubule, the loop of Henle, and the distal convoluted tubule
-blood, under pressure, enters the capillaries of the glomerulus, which is located inside the cup shaped Bowmans capsule
-materials in the blood, such as water, soluble salts, urea, and soluble nutrients, diffuse out of the blood into Bowmans capsule
-kidneys also absorb any small soluble particles that are in high concentration from the blood, thus helping to maintain homeostasis
-as this filtrate passes through the two tubules of the nephron, the water, nutrients, and ions are reabsorbed into the blood by diffusion, osmosis, or active transport into the capillaries surrounding the tubules
Kidneys
2/2
-the concentrated mixture of wastes that is left in the tubules formes urine, which enters the collecting tubules to the ureters
-the ureters transport urine to the urinary bladder for storage
-urine is excreted through the urethra, which is near the vagina in females and through the penis in males
-in addition to the kidneys, the sweat glands, lungs, and liver function in excretion
What plays a role in excretion?
kidneys, the sweat glands, lungs, and liver function in excretion
