Fungi Flashcards
Hyphae
Each of the branching filaments that make up the mycelium of a fungus; their purpose is to carry nutrients throughout the fungus.
Mycelium
The vegetative part of a fungus, consisting of a mass of branching, thread-like hyphae responsible for nutrient absorption.
Septate Hyphae
Hyphae with cross-walls (septa) separating individual cells.
Conectoytic Hyphae
Hyphae without cross-walls, forming a continuous cytoplasmic mass with many nuclei.
Alteration of Generations
Fungi sexually reproduce, undergoing a life cycle where they alternate between a haploid (n) and diploid (2n) phase, eventually returning to haploid.
Zygomycetes
A group of fungi including bread molds that reproduce by forming zygospores.
Ascomycetes
A group of fungi characterized by the presence of sac-like structures (asci) that contain spores, often with gills on the inside for spore production.
Basidiomycetes
A group of fungi including shelf fungi, toadstools, and most mushrooms, with spores produced in gills under the cap.
Yeast
Unicellular fungi, often single-celled, capable of mobile growth.
Spore
A reproductive cell or multicellular structure that is resistant to unfavorable environmental conditions and can develop into a new organism.
