Endocrine System Flashcards
Where do hormones come from?
Glands
Difference in Signals between Nervous and Endocrine
Nervous signals are more immediate but shorter
Paracine
Locally released
Autocrine
send signal to yourself
Synaptic Signalling
signal transmitted to one cell through narrow pathway
Neuroendocrine Signalling
- neurons release stuff to all of body
Endocrine Signaling
circulated throughout the body and this is good for distant sites
Pheromone Definition
chemicals that are released into the environment
Pheromone Functions
serve many functions, including marking trails leading to food, defining territories, warning of predators, and attracting potential mates
Local Regulators Examples
- Prostglandins and fatty acids
-Polypeptides - Gases
Nitric Oxide
a gas that functions in the body as both a local regulator and a neurotransmitter when oxygen levels fall
- helps with vasodilation
Vasodilation
the dilatation of blood vessels, which decreases blood pressure.
What 3 categories do hormones fall into?
polypeptides, steroids, and amines
How do water soluble hormones travel?
travel freely in the bloodstream, and bind to cell-surface receptors
How do fat soluble hormones travel?
Lipid-soluble hormones diffuse across cell membranes, travel in the bloodstream bound to transport proteins, and diffuse through the membrane of target cells
