Liu Wei Di Huang Wan
“6 ingredient pill with rehmannia”
Ingredients:
Shu Di Huang (24g), Shan Zhu Yu (12g), Shan Yao (12g), Ze Xie (9g), Mu Dan Pi (9g), Fu Ling (9g)
Functions:
Enriches the yin, nourishes the KD
Indications:
LV and KD yin deficiency
Soreness and weakness in the lower back, dizziness, vertigo, headache, tinitus, diminished hearing, night sweats, nocturnal emissions. It may also have hot palms and soles, chronic dry throat, toothache, heel pain, wasting and thirsting disorder.
Tongue: Red tongue, little or no coating
Pulse: Rapid, thin
Clinical applications:
1. For LV and KD deficiency
2. Used for chronic nephritis, hypertension, diabetes, pulmonary or renal tuberculosis, hyperthyroidism.
C/C:
Cloying, so use with caution in case of indigestion, diarrhea due to SP qi xu, or white greasy tongue coating.
Zhi Bai Di Huang Wan
Modification of Liu Wei Di Huang Wan
Ingredients: Add Zhi Mu (6g) and Huang Bai (6g)
Clinical use: for yin deficiency with vigorous fire syndrome, night sweats, or steaming bone disorder, irritability, tidal fever, or chronic UTI, dry mouth and tongue, large pulse at Chi position.
Qi Ju Di Huang Wan
Modification of Liu Wei Di Huang Wan
Ingredients: Add Gou Qi Zi (9g) and Ju Hua (9g)
Clinical use: for LV & KD yin deficiency and blurry, dry and rough painful eyes.
Du Qi Wan
Modification of Liu Wei Di Huang Wan
Ingredients: Add Wu Wei Zi
Clinical use: for KD yin deficiency and SOB, wheezing or hiccuping.
Er Long Zuo Ci Wan
(Modification of Liu Wei Di Huang Wan)
Pill for deafness “ear”
Ingredients: Add Ci Shi, Wu Wei Zi, and Chai Hu
Clinical use: for KD yin deficiency, tinnitus, and loss of hearing.
Hu Qian Wan
“Hidden Tiger Pill”
Ingredients:
Huang Bai (150g), Zhi Mu (60g), Shu Di Huang (60g), Bai Shao (60g), Gui Ban (120g), Hu Gu (30g), Suo Yang (45g), Chen Pi (60g), Gan Jiang (15g)
Functions:
Enriches the yin, descends the fire, and strengthens the sinews and bones.
Indications:
Atrophy due to KD and LV yin deficiency with flaring-up fire syndromes.
Soreness and weakness in the lower back and knees, atrophy of the bones and sinews, wasting of the muscles of legs and feet, difficulty in walking.
Tongue: Red Tongue, little coating
Pulse: Rapid, frail, or thin pulse.
Clinical applications:
1. Used for bones and sinews, wei syndrome (weakness & atrophy of lower back & extremities) with interior heat.
2. Currently used for sequelae of polio and tuberculosis of knee.
C/C: ST/SP qi deficiency, damp heat.
Zuo Gui Wan
“Restore the left (KD) pill”
Ingredients:
Shu Di Huang (24g), Shan Zhu Yu (12g), Shan Yao (12g), Gou Qi Zi (12g), Gui Ban Jiao (12g), Lu Jiao Jiao (12g), Tu Si Zi (12g), Chuan Niu Xi (9g)
Functions:
Enriches the yin, tonifies KD, replenished essence, benefits marrow.
Indications:
True yin deficiency with essence and marrow depletion syndromes.
Dizziness, vertigo, sore & weakness in lower back and knees, nocturnal emissions, night sweats, dry mouth and throat.
Tongue: Red, shiny or peeled tongue
Pulse: Rapid, thin pulse
Clinical applications:
1. Used for true yin deficiency with KD essence deficiency.
C/C: SP qi deficiency, diarrhea
Zuo Gui Yin
“Restore the left (KD) drink”
(Modification of Zuo Gui Wan)
Ingredients:
Shu Di Haung, Shan Yao, Gou Qi Zi, Fu Ling, Shan Zhu Yu, and Zhi Gan Cao
Clinical applications:
For mild yin deficiency case.
Er Zhi Wan
“Two solstice pill”
Ingredients: Nu Zhen Zi, Han Lian Cao, add Sang Shen Function: Tonifies KD and benefits LV Indications: KD and LV yin deficiency syndromes Bitter taste and dry mouth, dizziness, insomnia, soreness & weakness in knees and lower back, spermatorrhea, nocturnal emission, night sweats, premature graying hair or loss of hair. Tongue: red, dry tongue Pulse: thready pulse Clinical applications: 1. Used by itself and addition to other formulas when LV and KD yin need to be tonified. 2. Considered to be superior in treating premature greying hair or loss of hair.
Da Bu Yin Wan
“Great tonify the yin pill”
Ingredients:
Shu Di Huang (18g), Gui Ban (18g), Zhi Mu (12g), Huang Bai (12g), Zhu Ji Sui, Feng Mi
Functions:
Tonifies yin and descends fire
Indications:
Yin deficiency fire rising syndromes
Tidal fever and steaming bone, night sweats, spermatorrhea, coughing with blood, irritability, and weakness with sensation of heat or pain in knee or leg.
Tongue:
Red tongue, little coating
Pulse:
Rapid and forceful in the Chi position
Clinical applications:
1. Used for flaring upward of fire due to LV and KD xu.
2. Used for tuberculosis (LU, KD, bones), hyperthyroid, diabetes mellitus.
C/C:
Poor appetite, loose stools, excess fire.
Yi Guan Jian
“Linking Decoction”
Ingredients:
Sheng Di Huang (18-30g), Sha Shen (18-30g), Mai Men Dong (18-30g), Dang Gui (18-30g), Gou Qi Zi (9-18g), Chuan Lian Zi (4-5g)
Functions:
Enriches the yin, spreads the LV qi
Indications:
LV and KD yin xu with LV qi stagnation syndromes
Chest & hypochondriac pain, epigastric and abdominal distention, acid regurgitation, bitter taste or dry mouth and throat.
Tongue: red, dry tongue
Pulse: thin, frail, deficient, wiry
Clinical applications:
Used for LV & KD yin xu caused by epigastric and hypochondriac pain.
Used to treat peptic ulcer, hepatitis, chronic gastritis, LV pain due to fatty LV, nervous exhaustion.
C/C:
Damp or phlegm
Ming Mu Di Huang Wan

Ingredients:
Qi Ju Di Huang Wan + Dang Gui, Bai Shao, Bai Ji Li, Shi Jue Ming
Functions:
For various eye disorders due to LV & KD yin and blood xu.
Mai Wei Di Huang Wan

Ingredients:
Add Mai Men Dong, Wu Wei Zi
Functions:
For LU & KD yin xu and chronic cough or wheezing, coughing of blood.
Bu Fei E Jiao Tang
“Tonify the LU decoction with ass-hide gelatin”
Ingredients:
E Jiao (9g), Ma Dou Ling (6g), Niu Bang Zi (3g), Xing Ren (6g), Nuo Mi (Chao), Zhi Gan Cao (1.5g)
Functions:
Tonify yin, tonify LU, quiets coughing and stops bleeding.
Indication:
LU yin deficiency with dry heat syndrome
Cough with wheezing, dry parched throat, scanty or blood-streaked sputum.
Tongue: red, little coating
Pulse: floating, thin and rapid pulse
Clinical applications:
1. This formula is used for pediatric coughing due to yin deficiency.
2. It can be used to treat chronic pharyngitis, chronic bronchitis and pulmonary TB.
C/C:
Damp, phlegm, or cold in exterior.
Gui Lu Er Xian Jiao
“Tortoise shell and deer antler two-immortal syrup”
Ingredients:
Gui Ban (jiao-gelatin) (2.5 kg), Lu Jiao (Jiao-gelatin) (5kg), Ren Shen (0.5g), Gou Qi Zi (1.5kg)
Function:
Nourishes the yin, replenishes essence, benefits qi, strengthens yang.
Indication:
KD yin and yang depleted and Ren & Du channels jing and blood xu syndromes
Emaciation, weakness, spermatorrhea, impotence, nocturnal emission, diminished vision, and aching and weakness of the lower back and knees.
Tonggue:
Pulse: thin, frail pulse
Clinical applications:
1. It reaches beyond qi and blood to the yin and yang, and further to the essence and marrow.
2. Used for dysplasia, severe anemia, infertility, osteoporosis, and sexual dysfunction.
