Su Zi Jiang Qi Tang
“Su Zi directing qi downward decoction”
Ingredients:
Zi Su Zi (9g), Ban Xia (9g), Hou Po (6g), Chen Pi (9g), Qian Hu (6g), Rou Gui (3g), Dang Gui (6g), Zhi Gan Cao (6g), Sheng Jiang (2pcs), Zi Su Ye (5 pcs), Da Zao (1 pc)
Function:
Descending the rebellious qi, calms the asthma, eliminates phlegm, and stops coughing
Indication:
“Wheezing” due to excess cold phlegm obstruction syndrome
Coughing and wheezing with watery, copious sputum, a stifling sensation in the chest and diaphragm, SOB, also maybe pain and weakness of the lower back and legs, edema of the extremities.
Tongue: white, slippery or greasy coating
Pulse: wiry, slippery pulse
Clinical application:
- Used for wheezing and coughing due to “excess above and deficient below” syndrome which is excessive pathogenic qi obstructing the downward function of LU and deficiency qi disabling the grasping of qi functions of KD
Clinical applications:
- Exterior syndrome -> add Ma Huang, Xing Ren
- Qi xu -> add Ren Shen
C/C:
Phlegm-heat in LU
Ding Chuan Tang
“Arrest wheezing decoction”
Ingredients:
Ma Huang (9g), Bai Guo (9g), Xing Ren (9g), Su Zi (6g), Kuan Dong Hua (9g), Ban Xia (9g), Sang Bai Pi (6g), Huang Qin (6g), Gan Cao (3g)
Function:
Facilitates LU qi, clears heat, transforms the phlegm and calm asthma
Indication:
Asthma due to exterior wind-cold constrain and interior phlegm-heat syndrome
Coughing and wheezing with copious, thick and yellow sputum, labored breathing, also slightly aversion to wind-cold
Tongue: greasy, yellow coating
Pulse: slippery, rapid
Clinic application:
1. Used for excessive phlegm after contracted wind-cold and constrained LU qi transformed into heat.
2. Used for chronic bronchitis, bronchial asthma, and bronchiolitis
Modification:
- Severe stifling sensation in chest -> add Hou Po, Zhi Shi
- Thich yellow sputum that is difficult to expectorate -> add Gua Lou, Qian Hu
C/C:
Chronic LU & KD deficiency asthma
Si Mo Tang
“Four milled-herb decoction”
Ingredients:
Wu Yao (6g), Chen Xiang (6g), Bing Lang (9g), Ren Shen (6g)
Function:
Moves the qi, directs the rebellious qi downward, expands the chest, dissipates clumps
Indication:
UJ excess due to LV qi stagnation syndrome
Irritable, stifling sensation in the chest and diaphragm together with labored breathing, wheezing, epigastric focal distension and fullness, and loss of appetite
Tongue: white coating
Pulse: wiry
Clinical application:
1. Formula is used for constraint and clumping of the LV qi attacking to the LU and ST due to injury from emotional upset.
2. Used for functional bronchial asthma and emphysema.
Modifications:
- Cases with constipation, belching, and abdominal fullness, distention and pain -> add Zhi SHhi, Da Huang
C/C:
Long-term taking (damages qi)
Xuan Fu Dai Zhe Tang
“Inula and hematite decoction”
Ingredients:
Xuan Fu Hua (9g), Da Zhe Shi (9g), Ban Xia (9g), Sheng Jiang (10g), Ren Shen (6g), Zhi Gan Cao (6g), Da Zao
Function:
Directs the rebellious qi downward, transform phlegm, augments the qi, harmonizes the ST
Indication:
ST qi deficiency due to turbid-phlegm obstructing the interior syndrome
Unremitting belching, hiccough, regurgitation, nausea or vomiting and hard epigastric focal distention.
Tongue: white, slippery coating
Pulse: wiry, deficient
Clinical applications:
1. Used for phlegm turbidity obstructing the interior together with weak and deficiency ST qi
2. Used for functional gastric neurosis, chronic gastritis, gastric dilation, peptic ulcer, incomplete pyloric obstruction, spasm of the gastroesophageal junction and nervous hiccough.
Modification:
- Cases without ST qi xu -> omit Ren Shen, Da Zao and increase dosage of Dai Zhe Shi
- For copious sputum -> add Fu Ling, Chen Pi
Ju Pi Zhu Ru Tang
“Tangerine peel & bamboo shaving decoction”
Ingredients:
Ju Pi (12g), Zhu Ru (12g), Ren Shen (3g), Sheng Jiang (9g), Gan Cao (6g), Da Zao (30pcs)
Function:
Directs the rebellious qi downward, stops hiccough, augments the qi and clears heat
Indication:
ST qi deficiency heat hiccough syndrome
Hiccough, nausea, dry heaves or retching
Tongue: tender and red
Pulse: deficient, rapid
Clinical applications:
1. Used to treat up-flushing of qi and qi stagnation syndrome due to ST deficiency
2. Used for incomplete pyloric obstruction, post-surgical hiccough and morning sickness
Modifications:
- For cases with ST yin xu -> add Mai Men Dong, Shi Hu
- For hiccough due to ST heat without deficiency -> omit Ren Shen, Da Zao, Gan Cao, add Shi Di

Ding Xiang Shi Di Tang
“Clove and persimmon stem decoction”
Ingredients:
Diang Xiang (6g), Shi Di (9g), Sheng Jiang (6g), Ren Shen (9g)
Function:
Warms the MJ, augments qi, directs rebellious qi downward and stops hiccough
Indication:
Deficiency cold hiccough syndrome
Hiccough, belching or vomiting with stifling sensation in the epigastrium and focal distention of the chest
Tongue: pale, white coating
Pulse: submerged, slow
Clinical application:
1. Used to treat hiccup, belching or vomiting due to cold from ST deficiency. Chronic disease or improper treatment may injure the SP/ST and lead to cold from MJ deficiency.
2. Used for neurological hiccough and diaphragm spasms.
Modification:
- For cases with phlegm ->Add Ban Xia, Chen Pi
- For cases without qi deficiency -> omit Ren Shen
