Shi Hui San

“Ten charred substance powder”

A

Ingredients:
Da Ji, Xiao Ji, Qian Cao Gen, Ce Bai Ye, Bai Mao Gen, He Ye, Zong Lu Pi, Zhi Zi, Da Huang, Mu Dan Pi
Functions:
Cools the blood, stops bleeding
Indications:
UJ & MJ bleeding due to blood heat runs recklessness syndrome
Acute bleeding such as vomiting, spitting, or coughing up blood or nosebleed
Tongue: red
pulse: rapid
Clinical applications:
1. Treats fire blazing in UJ and MJ; the symptoms are acute bleeding from upper orifices with bright red blood, red tongue and rapid pulse.
2. Used for acute hemorrhagic esophagitis or gastritis, bleeding peptic ulcer, pulmonary TB, or bronchiectasis causing hemoptysis.
Modifications:
Severe bleeding due to rebellious qi & blazing fire upward -> change powder to decoction, increase dosage of Da Huang, Zhi Zi, and add Niu Xi and Dai Zhe Shi
C/C:
Bleeding due to deficient cold

Si Sheng Wan

“Four fresh pills”

A

Ingredients:
Sheng Ce Bai Ye (12g), Sheng Di Huang (15g), Sheng He Ye (9g), Sheng Ai Ye (15g)
Functions:
Cools the blood, stops bleeding
Indications:
UJ bleeding due to blood heat or nosebleed particularly of fresh-red blood accompanied by dry mouth and throat.
Tongue: red or deep-red
Pulse: wiry, rapid, or forceful, wiry and rapid
Clinical applications:
1. Treats bleeding in UJ due to blood heat running recklessness
2. Used for acute hemorrhagic esophagitis, gastritis, bleeding peptic ulcer, pulmonary TB, bronchochiectasis causing hemoptysis, gingivitis.
Modifications:
More bleeding -> add Xiao Ji, Bai Mao Gen, Ou Jie, Xian He Cao

Huai hua San

“Sophora Japonica Flower powder”

A

Ingredients:
Huai hua (chao) (12g), Ce Bai Ye (chao) (12g), Jing Jie Sui (6g), Zhi Ke (fu chao) (6g)
Functions:
Cools the intenstines, stops bleeding, disperses wind, moves qi downward
Indications:
Bleeding due intestinal-wind and organ toxin disorders
Bright-red bleeding from rectum that precedes or follows decoction, or blood in the stool, and hemorrhoids with either bright-red or dark-red bleeding.
Tongue: red
Pulse: wiry, rapid, or soggy, rapid
Clinical applications:
1. This formula treats intestinal wind disorder or damp-heat in the intestines and stomach where it forms toxins.
2. Used for amebic dysentery, ulcerative colitis, hemorrhoids, anal fissure, rectal prolapse, colitis and colon cancer.
Modifications:
Vigorous heat in LI -> add Huang Lian, Huang Bai
Excessive bleeding -> add Di Yu
C/C:
For a long-term taking; chronic bleeding due to qi or yin deficiency.

Xiao ji Yin Zi

“Small thistle drink decoction”

A

Ingredients:
Cools the blood, stops bleeding, promotes urination, and unblocks Lin syndrome
Indications:
Bloody lin syndrome
Bloody, frequent, burning and painful urination, or simple blood in urine with thirst and irritability
Tongue: red, thin, yellow coating
Pulse: rapid, forceful
Clinical applications:
1. Treats blood in urine due to excessive heat in LJ
2. used for UTI, polycystic KD, renal cysts, sickle cell disease.
Modifications:
Effective to clear heat and drain fire -> omit Zhi Gan Cao, add Sheng Gan Cao
Burning pain -> add Hou Po, Hai jin Sha
C/C:
Cronic urinary bleeding due to qi xu
