Tao He Cheng Qi Tang

“Peach pit to order decoction”

A

Ingredients:
Tao Ren (12g), Da Huang (12g), Gui Zhi (6g), Mang Xiao (6g), Zhi Gan Cao (6g)
Function:
Activates blood, drains heat and breaks up blood stasis
Indication:
Blood buildup in Lower Jiao syndrome
Acute lower abdominal pain, incontinence of urine, night fevers, delirious speech, irritability, restlessness and thirst, manic behavior, dysmenorrhea, amenorrhea
Tongue:
Pulse: submerged, full, choppy
Clinic application:
1. Used for blood accumulation of blood stasis and heat in the lower jiao with lower abdominal tension and pain with smooth urination.
2. Used for acute endometritis, retained placenta, pelvic inflammatory disease, intestinal obstruction, ectopic pregnancy, benign prostatic hypertrophy, epilepsy
Modifications:
- For severe fire stasis in UJ with headache with red eyes & face, nose bleding -> Add Sheng Di Huang, Mu Dan Pi, Niu Xi
- For trauma -> add Chi Shao, Dang Gui wei, Hong Hua, Su Mu
- Irregular menstruation & amenorrhea -> add Dang Gui & Hong Hua

Xue Fu Zhu Yu Tang

“Blood mansion drives out decoction”

A

Ingredients:
Tao Ren (12g), Hong Hua (9g), Dang Gui (9g), Chi Shao (6g), Sheng Di (9g), Chuan Xiong (5g), Niu Xi (9g), Chai Hu (3g), Jie Geng (5g), Zhi Ke (5g), Gan Cao (3g)
Function:
Invigorates blood, dispels blood stasis, moves qi, alleviates pain
Indication:
Blood & qi stagnation in the chest
Pain in the chest and hypochondria, chronic stubborn headache with a fixed & piercing quality, chronic incessant hiccough, choking sensation when drinking, dry heaves, depression or spirits accompanied by sensation of warmth in chest, palpitation, insomnia, restless sleep, irritability, extreme mood swings, evening tidal fever.
Tongue: dark-red, dark spots on the sides of the tongue, dark or purplish lips
Pulse: choppy or wiry, tight
Clinic application:
- Used to treat blood stasis in blood mansion with impairment of blood flow in the area above the diaphragm.
- Used for coronary artery disease, angina pectoris, rheumatic heart disease, costochondritis
C/C:
During pregnancy, all kinds of active hemorrhagic disorder, bleeding diathesis

Tong Qiao Huo Xue Tang
“Unblocking orifice and invigorating blood decoction”
(Modification of Xue Fu Zhu Yu Tang)

A

Ingredients:
She Xiang, Tao Ren, Hong Hua, Chuan Xiong, Chi Shao Cong Bai, Da Zao, Sheng Jiang, and wine
Function:
Invigorates the blood, dispel blood stasis and opens the orifices.
Indication:
For accumulation of blood stasis in the head, face, and upper part of the body with headache and vertigo, chronic tinnitus, hair loss and dark “brandy” nose.

Shen Tong Zhu Yu Tang
“Body pain driving out decoction”
(Modification of Xue Fu Zhu Yu Tang)

A

Ingredients:
Qin Jiao, Qiang Huo, Di Long, Tao Ren, Hong Hua, Dang Gui, Chuan Xiong, Mo Yao, Wu Ling Zhi, Xiang Fu, Niu Xi and Gan Cao
Function:
Invigorates blood, dispels blood stasis, moves qi, opens collaterals, unblocks obstruction, and alleviates pain.
Indications:
For bi syndromes due to qi and blood obstruction in the channels & collaterals with symptoms such as shoulder pain, arm pain, lower back pain, leg pain or other chronic aches and pains of body.

Ge Xia Zhu Yu Tang
“Diaphragm below driving out decoction”
(Modification of Xue Fu Zhu Yu Tang)

A

Ingredients:
Dang Gui (9g), Chuan Xiong (6g), Tao Ren (9g), Hong Hua (9g), Mu Dan Pi (6g), Chi Shao (6g), Yan Hu Suo (3g), Xiang Fu (5g), Wu Yao (6g), Zhi Ke (5g), Wu Ling Zhi ((g), Gan Cao (9g)
Functions:
Invigorates the blood, dispels blood stasis, moves qi alleviates pain
Indications:
Blood and qi stagnatio below the diaphragm
For blood stasis and LV qi stagnation in the area below the diaphragm accompanied by fixed pain or abdominal masses which are visible when lying down
Tongue:purple with purple spots
Pulse: hastate or choppy
Clinical applications:
- Used to treat blood stasis in the area below the diaphragm; the key symptoms are pains below chest area with fixed and palpable masses that are visible when lying down.
- It is anti-coagulation, dilate blood vessels, releive smooth muscle spasm, analgesia and anti-inflammatory.
- Currently used chronic hepatits, liver cirrhosis, colon cancer, chronic leukemia, ectopic pregnancy chronic pelvic inflammatory disease, adhesive pleurisy, peritonitis, infertility.
C/C:
Pregnant or person with weak constitution without stagnation, or taking anti-coagulant medication.

Shao Fu Zhu Yu Tang
“Lower abdomen driving out decoction”
(Modification of Xue Fu Zhu Yu Tang)

A

Ingredients:
Dang Gui (5.4g), Chi Shao (3.6g), Chuan Xiong (1.8g), Wu Ling Zhi (3.6g), Pu Huang (5.4g), Mo Yao (1.8g), Ya Hu Suo (1.8g), Xiao Hui Xing (0.04g), Gan Jiang (0.36g), Rou Gui (1.8g)
Function:
Invigorates the blood, dispels blood stasis, warms the channels and alleviates pain
Indications:
Lower abdominal masses, irregular menstruation, metrorrhagia and infertility
Clinical applications:
- blood stagnation in lower abdomen
- blood clots or sharp pain during period
Modifications:
- Painful period with cold damp -> add Cang Zhu, Fu Ling, Yi Yi Ren
- Painful period with deficiency cold accumulation -> add Ba Ji Tian, Xian Mao
- Breast distended pain -> add Yu Jin, Chuan Lian Zi
- Soreness and weakness of lower back during menstruation -> add Xu Duan, Niu Xi, Du Zhang, Sang Ji Sheng
- Qi deficiency -> Omit Wu Ling Zhi, Chuang Xiong and add Huang Qi and Ren Shen
- Cold stagnation caused infertility -> add Wu Yao, Tu Si Zi, Xiang Fu, Sang Ji Sheng
C/C:
No blood stagnation in lower abdomen and pregnancy

Shi Xiao San

“Sudden smile powder”

A

Ingredients:
Pu Huang (6g), Wu Ling Zhi (6g)
Function:
Invigorates blood, dispels blood stasis, disperses accumulation and alleviates pain
Indication:
Blood stasis obstructing syndrome
Irregular menstruation, dysmenorrhea, retention of lochia, postpartum abdominal pain, acute colicky pain in lower abdomen, severe pain in middle abdomen, or epigastric pain.

Clinical application:
1. Used for pain due to blood stagnation, especially used for blood stasis obstructing in LV channels.
2. Currently used for dysmenorrhea, chronic gastritis, endometriosis, and angina pectoris
Modifications:
- Cases with severe qi stagnation -> combine with Jin Ling Zi San
- Cases with cold -> Add Xiao Hui Xiang, Pao Jiang
- For irregular menses due to blood stasis and blood deficiency -> take with Si Wu Tang
C/C:
During pregnancy (Pu Huang), ST deficiency (Wu Ling Zhi)

Dan Shen Yin

“Dan Shen (Salvia) drink”

A

Ingredients:
Dan Shen (30g), Tan Xiang (6g), Sha Ren (6g)
Function:
Invigorates the blood, dispels blood stasis, moves the qi, and alleviates pain
Indication:
HT & ST pain due to qi & blood stagnation syndrome
Abdominal and epigastric pain which may radiate upward, accompanied by sign and symtoms of blood stasis and qi stagnation

1. Used to treat abdominal and epigastric pain due to qi and blood stagnation with slight heat, or HT and ST pain
2. Used for peptic ulcer, chronic gastritis, gastric neurosis, angina pectoris, hepatitis, or dysmenorrhea

During pregnancy; hemorrhagic disease

Da Huang Zhe Chong Wan

“Rhubarb and ground beetle pill”

A

Ingredients:
Dan Huang, Zhe Chong, Tao Ren, Gan Qi, Meng Chong, Shui Zhi, Qi Cao, Huang Qin, Xing Ren, Sheng Di Huang, Bai Shao, Gan Cao
Function:
Break up and dispel blood stasis, generate new blood
Indication:
Blood consumption syndrome
Emaciation, abdominal fullness, loss of appetite, rough, dry and scaly skin, a dull and dark appearance of eyes, amenorrhea, and tidal fever
Clinical applications:
1. Used in treating concurrent conditions of blood stasis and consumption.
2. Used for chronic hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, alcoholic liver disease, hepatic neoplasms, chronic pelvic inflammation, tubercular peritonitis and uterine leiomyoma
C/C:
During pregnancy

Bu Yang Huan Wu Tang

“Tonify the yang, restore the five decoction”

A

Ingredients:
Huang Qi (120g), Dang Gui Wei (6g), Chuan Xiong (3g), Chi Shao (5g), Tao Ren (3g), Hong Hua (3g), Di Long (3g)
Functions:
Tonifies the qi, invigorates the blood, unblocks collaterals
Indications:
Sequelae of wind-stroke syndrome
Hemiplagia, paralysis, and atrophy of the lower limbs, facial paralysis, slurred speech, drooling, dry stools, frequent urination or urinary incontinence.
Tongue: white coating
Pulse: moderate
Clinical applications:
1. Used for sequelae of wind-stroke due to qi deficiency with blood stasis obstructing the channels.
2. Used for sequelae of cerebrovascular accident, and any other factor caused hemiplagia and paraplegia.
Modifications:
1. For cases with cold -> add Fu Zi
2. Cases with SP/ST qi xu -> add Dang Shen, Bai Zhu
3. Slurred speech -> add Shi Chang Pu, Yu Jin, Yuan Zhi
C/C:
Phlegm-heat in LU
