Gu Jing Wan
“Stabilize the menses pill”
Ingredients:
Gui Ban (zhi) (15g), Bai Shao (15g), Huang Qin (chao) (15g), Huang Bai (chao) (6g), Chu Gen Pi (12g), Xiang Fu (6g)
Function:
Enriches the yin, clears the heat, stabilizes the menses, and stops bleeding
Indication:
Beng Lou syndrome
Continuous menstruation or uterine bleeding that is alternating between trickling and gushing of blood; the blood is red and may contain dark-purple clots. Accompanying signs include a heat sensation in the chest and irritability, abdominal pain and dark urine.
Tongue: red
Pulse: rapid, wiry
Clinical application:
1. Used for LV and KD yin xu with vigorous fire disturbing the chong & ren mai channels leading to abnormal uterine bleeding.
2. Used for functional uterine bleeding.
Modifications:
For chronic bleeding = Long Gu, Mu Li, Hai Piao Xiao, Qian Cao Gen
Wan Dai Tang
“End the discharge decoction”
Ingredients:
Ren Shen (6g), Bai Zhu (tu chao) (30g), Shan Yao (chao) (30g), Cang Zhu (zhi) (9g), Chen Pi (2g), Che Qian Zi (jiu chao) (9g), Bai Shao (jiu chao) (15g), Chai Hu (2g), Jing Jie Sui (2g), Gan Cao (3g)
Function:
Strengthens the SP, dry dampness, soothes LV to regulate qi, and transforms dampness to stop vaginal discharge.
Indication:
Leukorrhea due to SP xu and LV constraint with turbid cold dampness syndrome.
Profuse vaginal discharge that is white or pale yellow in color, and clear and thin in consistency with no foul-smell, also fatigue, lethargy, shiny, pale complexion, and loose stools.
Tongue: pale, white coating
Pulse: soggy and frail or moderate
Clinical applications:
1. Used for vaginal discharge due to vaginal discharge due to SP xu of cold damp type.
2. Used for genital itching, vaginitis, or cervical erosion due to disharmony between LV & SP with turbid dampness discharge.
Modifications:
Severe damp-heat = Huang Bai, Long Dan Cao
Severe damp cold with abdominal pain = Pao Jiang, Xiao Hui Xiang
Chronic discharge = Long Gu, Mu Li
C/C:
Damp-heat in LJ
Yi Huang Tang
“Change yellow (discharge) decoction”
Ingredients:
Shan Yao (chao) (30g), Qian Shi (chao) (30g), Bai Guo (10pcs), Huang Bai (yen chao) (6g), Che Qian Zi (3g)
Function:
Strengthens SP, clears heat, dries dampness, and stops vaginal discharge.
Indication:
Leukorrhea due to KD and SP qi xu with turbid dampness heat syndrome.
Vaginal discharge that is yellowish white in color, sticky with fishy-smelling, also reduced appetite, loose stools, soreness and weakness of lower back and legs.
Tongue: pale, thin, white-coating
Pulse: soft, slippery maybe submerged
Clinical applications:
1. Used for vaginal discharge due to SP xu of damp-heat type.
2. Used for vaginitis, cervicitis due to disharmony between SP and KD with damp-heat discharge.
Modifications:
Severe damp heat = Tu Fu Ling, Yi Yi Ren
Dang Gui Liu Huang Tang
“Tangkuei and six yellow decoction”
Ingredients:
Dang Gui (9g), Sheng Di Huang (15g), Shu Di Huang (15g), Huang Lian (6g), Huang Qin (9g), Huang Bai (9g), Huang Qi (24g)
Function:
Nourishes yin, drains fire, stabilizes exterior, stops sweating.
Indication:
Yin xu with excess fire and night sweats syndrome.
Fever, night sweats, red face, dry mouth, and parched lips, irritability, dry stools, and dark and scanty urine.
Tongue: red, dry
Pulse: rapid
Clinical applications:
1. Used for night sweats caused by yin deficiency with excess fire, combined with night sweats, red face, irritability, and dark and scanty urine with rapid pulse.
2. Used for tuberculosis, diabetes, hyperthyroidism, perimenopausal syndromes, and nervous exhaustion.
Modifications:
Severe sweating = Ma Huang Lian, Fu Xiao Mai
Yin xu without excess fire = remove Huang Lian and, Huang Qin, and add Zhi Mu.
C/C:
SP & ST qi xu and/or diarrhea with poor appetites.
