Q

Storing the Imported Media:
Utilizing external media is the best practice for media storage in Final Cut Pro. Keeping the library media empty helps minimize the library file size, which allows you to easily pass a library to collaborators during the run of a job. The source media files may be stored in one centrally accessible location where they are available to multiple users. Sharing a media empty library file that references only externally managed media enables efficient and cost-effective collaboration using just one set of source media files on a server. Furthermore, that one set of external files may be accessed by other applications such as Motion or Logic Pro X, so compositors and audio engineers may also collaborate seamlessly with the _________ team.

Q

Storing the Imported Media:
The media full managed solution works well for an editor who is working solo and/or prefers to have FCP manage the media. Every imported source media file is copied into the library file. This may result in _________ media files on the volume, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing unless you are running out of available storage space.

Q

Q

Importing as “Leave Files in Place”:
The ultimate external media import option for the obsessive-compulsive editor is “Leave files in place” (the opposite import option of “Copy files into”). “Leave files in place” references these external files with no moving or copying of the imported source media files. Symlinks are created within the _________ event that point to the external files, wherever those files may be.

Q

Importing as “Leave Files in Place”:
Choosing “Leave files in place” virtually mandates that you organize your source media files before importing them into an event because moving, renaming, or deleting a source media file causes the referenced clip to go offline in FCP. When you decide that you will manage external media, then you are directly responsible for keeping FCP abreast of any media management you perform outside of the ___________.

Q

Importing as “Leave Files in Place”: (page 413)

  1. In the Media Import window, navigate to the FCPX Media/LV2/LV Aerials folder, select the files, and click Import Selected.
  2. In the Media Import Options window, ensure that “Add to existing event” is selected and the External event is chosen in the pop-up menu. Choosing the External event here does not determine the external or managed state of a source media file. To be available for editing, every clip must be in an event. However, the actual media file does not have to be stored within that event. A symlink can stand in for the clip’s source media file within the event. The choice of event within the pop-up menu defines only where the clip will appear in the Libraries pane. The physical location in controlled in the Media _______ section of the Media Import window.

Q

Importing as “Leave Files in Place”: (page 414)
The “Leave files in place” option is literally an “edit in place” command. It produces no copies, and it does not move media. It just creates a _________ to the source media file and adds it to the chosen event.

Q

Relinking Offline Clips to Source Media: (page 414)
If the source media files were renamed or moved, you may be able to point the offline (“Missing File” message) clips toward the alternative source media files.
1. Select the event in the Library containing offline clips
2. Choose File > Relink Files
3. Choose to relink only missing clips or all clips
4. Click Locate All
5. Navigate to the listed file’s location. Select the file and click the confirmation.
6. In the Relink Files window, choose whether you want to copy files to the event you select in the next pop-up menu, or leave them in place as reference source media files.
7. Click ______ Files

Q

Importing as Managed Clips (p. 415)
For an editor who struggles with media management, handing the media management duties over to FCP may save hours (or days) of frustration. A simple selection in the _____ ______ _______ window creates managed media within an event. By allowing FCP to take command, struggles with media management are instantly diminished.

Media Import Options

18
Q

Importing as Managed Clips (p. 415)
1. Reopen the Media Import window by pressing _______-_
2. From the folder, choose your files and click Import Selected.
3. Select the “Create new event in” option, and from the pop-up menu of all open libraries, choose the “External vs Managed” library
4. For the event name, enter “Managed”
5. In the Media Storage section, select the “Copy files into” option.
6. From the Copy destination pop-up menu, choose “External vs Managed” library, and click Import
(Now that you have a library of events containing both managed and external media, let’s see how you can tell the difference between them in the Info inspector)
7. Select the “External vs Managed” library to display all clips in the Browser
8. In the Browser, switch to list view, and then select Aerials_11_03a.
9. With the clip selected, look at the lower portion of the Info inspector to find the File Information section. This section lists the containing event for the selected clip. In this instance, Aerial_11_03a is stored in the External event. Looking at the next info item, you’ll find that the location is the volume where you placed the FCPX Media folder. If your FCPX Media folder is stored on your desktop, for example, then Location will display the volume’s name.
10. In the Browser, select Aerials_13_01b. The Info Inspector’s File information displays the location of this file as “External vs Managed” library. This is a managed media file as it is stored in the library.

Q

Importing as Managed Clips (p. 415)
Choosing “Copy files into” identifies clips as managed media. The destination pop-up menu for the option lists the library containing the event you previously selected. Although you could copy the file to an external location, in this exercise you want FCP to completely manage the clip, so you should choose the listed library rather than an ________ location.

A

external

20
Q

Importing as Managed Clips (p. 415)
The “Copy files into” pop-up menu allows you to redirect imported media to an external location. This functionality is available regardless of whether the source media files are located on a camera card or a local/network ______.

Q

Importing by Dragging from the Finder (p.418)
You may import source media files directly into an event in the Libraries pane by dragging them from the Finder or a supported application. While dragging, the pointer will indicate whether you are importing the files as external or managed media. A hooked arrow indicated the file is imported as an external media file. An arrow with a circled plus sign indicates that the file will be copied into the event as managed media. If you do not see the pointer you want, try holding down the Option key, Command key, or the Command-______ key as you drag.

Q
No Duplicates (p.418)
A Library's database efficiently manages media in several ways. One efficiency activates when importing the same source media file...again. If the source media file SMF1 exists (external or managed) in Event A of Library X, and you re-import SMF1 to Event A or B, no duplicate source media file is created. SMF1 is used as the source media file for the clip in Event A and Event B - two \_\_\_\_\_ referring to a single source media file.
