fascia function Flashcards
1
Q
what is fascia
A
- Term used to describe the sheath / sheet / wrapping tissue that surrounds deep structures of the body
2
Q
what are the 2 different types of fascia
A
superficial and deep
3
Q
what is superficial fascia
A
- Loose connective tissue
- Collagen and elastic fibers
4
Q
what is deep fascia
A
- Dense organized connective tissue
- Devoid of episode tissue
5
Q
where is superficial fascia found
A
subcutaneous tissue, varies in thickness and distribution
6
Q
where is deep fascia found
A
deep to superficial fascia, almost everywhere, investing fascia/intermuscular fascia
7
Q
what are the functions of fascia
A
- Packing and insulation
- Thermoregulation
- Protective padding
- Support for tissues / organs
- Reduces friction
- Transmits mechanical force
8
Q
what is compartment syndrome
A
- increased pressure caused by swelling of tissue or increase in fluid
- affects functions of the muscles or nerves in the compartment
9
Q
how can you treat compartment syndrome
A
- fasciotomy to relieve pressure in emergency
10
Q
fascia planes and infection
A
- Infection tends to spread within fascial compartments, or in between fascial compartments
- The deep fascia helps to prevent the spread of infection from one compartment to another
