What are the trends and patterns in family size?
DECREASED
-just under half of all families have only one child

How has the change in women’s position effectively caused family size to decrease?
Women are prioritising and focusing on their career. they either do not have children or wait until much later in life and as a result this had led to fewer children
How has the rise of individualism effectively caused family size to decrease?
Beck argues:
-we now live in a materialistic and consumer based society and this has affected our lifestyles
-many people want to spend their money on luxury goods, holidays, expensive homes etc opposed to children
Williams (2006) found that:
-cost of childcare was around 1/4 of an average family’s income
-average family spends £200,000 on a child from birth to 18- this has led to fewer children as people would want the money for themselves
