EVMM Integrating Spinal Manipulation into Practice Flashcards
Which lameness exams should include a spinal exam
All of them
How a cervical restriction can lead to a change in weight bearing
Cervical restriction that interferes with left lateral bend will cause horse to land harder on the left front when turning left. With inability to bend left horse will carry head to outside in extension and tilts the dorsal spinous processes to the inside of the bend and place more weight on left front.
How a restriction can cause nerve dysfunction
Affects nerve roots, the DRG, and spinal nerves by changes in the IVF
How muscle tension on one side affects the muscles on the other side
Reflex arc
3 common signs, owner complaints that indicate restrictions
- Back soreness
- Stiff or lacks lateral bend
- Carries hindquarters to one side
4 reasons to consider facet injections
- Palpation is painful
- Neuro signs
- Manipulation gives only temporary relief
- Structural change
A contra-indication to manipulation
Neurologic signs
Recent Trauma
Severe DJD
Joint laxity
Role of ultrasound in diagnosis and treatment of cervical facets
Shows joint effusion
When conventional medicine is most useful, when spinal manipulation is most useful
Conventional – treat damaged tissue
Spinal manipulation – restores ROM
Importance of an adjusting bale or other means of elevation
Proper set up
Elements of a complete medical record (9)
- Name, address, phone client
- Patient signalment
- History
- Exam findings
- Treatment
- Diagnosis or tentative diagnosis
- Medication given/dispensed
- Recommendation of additional Dx/Tx and record if O declines
- Summary of phone conversation and patient’s progress
The most helpful things you can do to make other DVMs refer to you (2)
Good communication
