What happens once horses get EIA?
they are positive for life
What is EIA caused by?
-equine infectious virus
-lentivirus = slow, progressive in nature
What are viruses related to EIA?
FIV (cats), BIV (bovine), HIV (humans)
When do symptoms show with EIA?
every couple of months
Retrovirus
use the enzyme reverse transcriptase
-replicates the cell backwards
-lacks proof-reading which mutates the virus (harder to treat and make a vaccine)
Clinical signs of EIA:
-viremia
-fever
-anemia
-blood is contaminated
Once treated…
it slows down for awhile
How is EIA transmitted/spread?
by tabanid flies
-more present in wet, high, humid environments
What test is used to test for EIA?
coggins
How long is coggins valid when traveling within the same state?
1 year
What % of horses are tested for EIA in the US?
25%
What country doesn’t require a coggins?
Canada
What three outcomes happen to a + EIA horse?
- euthanized
- stay living but isolated (200 yrds from other horses)
- send to slaughter for countries that allow it
