Embyology lol Flashcards
What do metanephrons become?
The permanent kidney
-begin to function weeks 9-11
METANEPHRONS ARE FORMED FROM URETERIC BUD AND METANEPHRIC BLASTEMA
Mesonephrons: what do they form and how long do they function for?
Differentiate into excretory units
Function between weeks 6-10 then regress.
What forms the metanephrons?
The ureteric bud and the metanephric blastema
Remember the metanephron then becomes the kidney lol
What is kidney agenesis?
Kidney agenesis is when a baby is missing one or oth kidneys at birth
-This can happen if URETERIC bud does not form
What does the ureteric bud form?
The collecting system
i.e. ureter, renal pelvis, major calyces, minor calyces and 1-3 million collecting ducts
What do the ureteric buds sprout from?
Day 28 - Ureteric buds sprout from distalmesonephric ducts
What is the metanephric blastema?
Day 32: ureteric buds penetrate portion of the sacral intermediate mesoderm to form the metanephric blastema
What does the metanephric blastema form?
The Nephron :)!
This is the functional unit of the kidney
Parts of the nephron
Bowmans capsule
Proximal convoluted tubule
Loop of henle
Distal convoluted tubule
Ascent of the kidneys (dun dun duuuun!!)
Kidneys start in the pelvis and then ascend to their final position
(blood supply is changing, as they ascend into the abdomen, the receive their blood supply from the aortic branches closest to them etc, if these branches don’t degenerate = accessory arteries)
What is a pelvic kidney?
When one kidney fails to ascend
What is a horseshoe kidney?
Inferior poles of metanephroi meet and fuse before ascent
Kidney trapped beneath IMA
What does the cloaca (hindgut endoderm) form?
Rectum
Primitive urogenital sinus
What does the primitive urogenital sinus form?
The bladder, pelvic urethra, definitive urogenital sinus
Where would a urachal cyst be found?
Somewhere along the allantois canal
