poison
anything that can harm your body by altering cell structure/function
toxin
poisonous substance secreted by plants, bacteria, or animals
patient assessment: ingested poison
Substance? How much? When did the exposure occur? How long a period did ingestion occur? Interventions? Weight? Effects of the ingestion?
contraindications of activated charcoal
patients can’t swallow, have altered mental status, ingested acids/bases, or siphoning gasoline

treat life threatening problems in primary assessment, secondary assessment, vitals, medical direction for charcoal, transport

delirium tremens
severe reaction that can be part of alcohol withdrawal; involves sweating, trembling, anxiety, and hallucinations
patient care: alcohol abuse
assess for trauma, monitor vitals, treat for shock, protect from self-injury, transport
uppers
stimulants that affect CNS and excite the user (ex. amphetamines)
downers
depressants that depress the CNS and relaxes the user (ex. barbiturates)
narcotics
drugs that relieve pain and causes relaxation
opiate triad
related to narcotics: coma, pinpoint pupils, and respiratory depression
