ECare - Chapter 17 (Respiratory Emergencies) Flashcards
adequate breathing
breathing that is sufficient to support life
determine normal breathing by
- rate
- rhythm
- quality
intervention for adequate breathing
oxygen by nonrebreather mask or nasal cannula
intervention for inadequate breathing
assisted ventilations
intervention for not breathing at all
assisted ventilations at a specific rate (12/min for adult; 20/min for children)
adults: what happens to pulse when there is less oxygen in the blood
it increases
children with respiratory difficulties: what happens to pulse when there is less oxygen in the blood?
slight increase, but dramatic drop
contraindications of CPAP
- anatomic-physiologic: mental status abnormal respiratory rate, cant sit up, hypotension
- pathologic: nausea and vomiting, penetrating chest trauma, shock, upper GI bleeding
chronic bronchitis
bronchiole lining is inflamed and excess mucus is formed
emphysema
less surface area on the alveoli
CPAP should not be given to
those with suspected lung collapse (spontaneous pneumothorax)
an inhaler is used for
respiratory problems that cause bronchoconstriction
what does an inhaler do
relax bronchioles
