ECare - Chapter 10 (Respiration and Artificial Ventilation) Flashcards
ventilation
inhalation and exhalation
alveolar ventilation
amount of air that reaches the alveoli
pulmonary respiration
exchange of gases between the alveoli and blood in pulmonary capillaries (CO2 goes to alveoli and O2 goes to hemoglobin)
cellular respiration
exchange of gasses between cells and blood (CO2 goes to blood and O2 goes to cells)
respiratory distress
increased work of breathing/SOB
body is compensating
respiratory failure
reduction of breathing where O2 intake is not enough to support life
respiratory arrest
breathing completely stops
Intervention: adequate breathing
nonrebreather mask or nasal cannula
Intervention: increasing respiratory distress
nonrebreather
Intervention: severe respiratory distress
assisted ventilations
Intervention: respiratory arrest
rescue breathing/artificial ventilation
patient assessment for breathing
Is the patient breathing?
Is it adequate breathing? (look, listen, feel)
NPPV
for patients breathing on own
stoma
permanent surgical opening in the neck where patient breathes
Intervention: stoma
- clear the stoma
- leave head in neutral position
- use pediatric-sized mask to seal around stoma
FROPVD
uses O2 under pressure to give artificial ventilations; has automatic flow restriction to avoid too much oxygen delivery
Automatic transport ventilator (ATV)
portable device that gives positive pressure ventilations. has settings to adjust ventilation rate/volume
safe residual for an oxygen cylinder
pressure is 200 psi or above
life of an oxygen cylinder (min)
gauge pressure (psi) - 200 (safe residual pressure) x constant / flow rate (L/min)
pressure regulator
device used to reduce pressure of cylinder
flowmeter
valve that indicates flow of oxygen (L/min)
nonrebreather mask
face mask and reservoir bag that gives high concentration of O2
nasal cannula
device that gives low concentration of O2
partial rebreather mask
face mask and reservoir O2 bag with no one-way valve ; helps preserve CO2 levels in blood to stimulate breathing
venturi mask
face mask and bag that gives specific concentration of O2 by mixing O2 with inhaled air
tracheostomy mask
device placed over stoma or tracheostomy tube to give O2
