anaphylaxis
severe allergic reaction where blood vessels dilate, causing drop in BP, and tissues lining respiratory system swell, interfering with airway.
causes of allergic reactions
insects, foods, plants, medications, others
anaphylaxis vs. mild allergic reaction
severe or anaphylaxis: patient has respiratory distress OR signs of shock
patient assessment: allergic reaction
primary assessment, treat immediately life-threatening problems, secondary assessment (ask about SAMPLE), and vitals
patient care: anaphylaxis or allergic reaction
oxygen via nonrebreather except for mild cases OR epinephrine autoinjector
what does epinephrine do?
constrict blood vessels and dilate the bronchioles
