What are the three types of eating disorders
Anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder
What is anorexia nervosa
While they are small, they think they are fat. 0.3 -1% of population. 10x more common in women. Body image distortion. Begins most commonly in early teens.
What are anorexia behaviours?
Severe restriction of food intake, excessive exercise, may use laxatives or diet aids, self-induced vomiting.
Anorexia signs and symptoms
Irritability, insomnia, weight loss, abdominal pain, dizziness and/or fainting, cold, social withdrawal, dresses in layers to hide shape, denies hunger, anaemia
Anorexia consequences
Heart problems, anemia, kidney failure, lack of period, during pregnancy you can miscarriage, 5-20% will die
What is bulimia nervosa?
Can be any body weight. Periods of food restriction followed by binging. tend to have lack of control. 1-3% of population. 90% of cases are female
Bulimia signs and symptoms
Weight change, tooth pain or discoloured teeth, swelling in cheeks or jaw, cuts on knuckles from purging, bloating, dehydration (you lose electrolytes from vomitting), frequent washroom trips, anxiety around eating
Differences between anorexia vs. Bulimia
Anorexia is underweight when bulimia is any weight. Excessive exercise is common in anorexia not bulimia. Both have body dysmorphia and ‘thin’ body image. Bulimia uses diet pills more commonly and anorexia uses them commonly
Age of death for anorexia and bulimia patients.
Anorexia: 36 (16 years after diagnosis). Bulimia: 42 (19 years after diagnosis).
How many years does depression, type 1, type 2 diabetes and heart attack shorten your life by?
Depression = 10 yrs, T1D = 8yrs, T2D = 2yrs, heart attack = 16 yrs.
Risk factors for eating disorder
Genetics, low self- esteem, influence of media, drive for masculinity.
How common is Disordered eating in athletes
0-19% in male and 6-45% in female. Much higher than general public. Sports that value leanness or have weight classes are more likely to have eating disorders.( figure skating, etc.)
Treatment For eating disorders
Nutrition therapy, psychotherapy, Support groups, medicine.
How many patients with anorexia nervosa make a partial recovery? Vs. How many make a full recovery?
75% partial, 21% full.
