E3) Lactate system in exercise & sports performance Flashcards
Key facts
Anaerobic- no oxygen
High intensity exercise- over a long period of time (60-90 seconds)
Carbohydrates- converted into glucose
Unused glucose- stored in liver & muscles as glycogen
ATP is made using the lactate system- breaking down glucose & glycogen: anaerobic glycolysis
Anaerobic glycolysis
ATP-PC system fades at around 10 secs, the anaerobic glycolysis begins
Liver and muscle glycogen stores are broken down by this system
Breakdown of glycogen releases energy- can be used to resynthesised ATP
Breakdown of glucose & glycogen
Glucose → 2 ATP molecules
Glycogen → 3 ATP molecules
Lactic acid production
Product of anaerobic glycolysis
Accumulates into the tissue & blood
Build up- cause fatigue in muscles & impedes contraction (burning feeling in muscles & pain)
Approx. 8 mins to aid LA removal from the muscles & storage of glycogen in the muscles
